Late Hendrix Style Backing Track w/ Scale Maps and How To Use Modal Interchange in A

04:49
This chord progression contains MODAL INTERCHANGE. The chords are Am G F D. All are in the Aeolian mode, except the D, which which is Dorian. But fear not! Use A minor pentatonic for the whole thing, or try to switch from Aeolian to Dorian on the D chord. This video will show you how. I based this groove on the slow moody version of Hey Baby played by Jimi on the Live at Berkeley album, check it out for inspiration! I treated the rhythm a little differently, but it's very similar, and really fun to jam over! The background animation is by Wesley Watters. Super Slow Crazy Horse Folk Funk Backing Track [E Dorian - 75 bpm]

05:27

Go HERE! https://nowyoushred.bandcamp.com/album/crazy-horse-folk-funk-e-dorian-75-bpm Key: E Dorian Chords: Em7 A7 This groove is similar to Down By The River by Neil Young. I had to add some more psychedelic vibe to it cuz that's never a bad thing, so I slapped a Jupiter 8 with a Roland Space Echo on there! E minor pentatonic is all you need, but add that natural 2 and 6 and you'll sound extra foooonky! Add b5 to the Dorian and you're really getting nasty! Try a super dry overdriven guitar tone - or sloppy wet, they both sound great on this! Happy Shredding! Most of the NYS tracks are now available at Bandcamp! Download them here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/now-you-shred/id993073264 Also, check out the Now YOU Shred Blog for a fresh new look at how to master the guitar, quickly! http://nowyoushred.com/ This chord progression is basically in D minor, however the one chord is a D MAJOR! In musical terms we call that MODAL INTERCHANGE (we swap in a I chord from D Major (Ionian) or Mixolydian). Why can we do that? Cuz BLUES, that’s why! Also it sounds good. Also, who cares? The real question is: What sounds good over it? Since we borrowed the D chord from D Ionian or Mixolydian, that means that we should play D Ionian or Mixolydian! But only on the D chord, the rest has got to be either Aeolian or Dorian. Rock Backing Track in D

Key: E Dorian Chords: E G A This jam track is kinda based on "Somewhere" by Jimi Hendrix. The E minor pentatonic or blues scale work for this whole jam track, but try adding the 6th scale tone on the A chord (watch the top grid). Why? Because the the A triad has a C# note in it (the 6th note of E Dorian). Also, don't forget to add the b5 blues note for even more variation (bottom grid). ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ Some Simple Shred Suggestions: ① Keep it simple, and repeat good ideas and sounds you like. ② Try to play what's in your head, not what you're looking at (like those chord grids up there) or what your fingers have "memorized". ③ Be expressive! Zeppelin Style Slow Blues Backing Track in C Minor with Scale Suggestions

06:04
This jam track is NOT Since I've Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin, but the chords are the same. This is not for Karaoke, it's for practicing guitar solos. Just a plain old C minor 12 bar blues with a few bells and whistles. C minor pentatonic, or C the blues scale will get you through the whole thing, but there are a few tricks to help you nail the changes. Just play the scales I put on the screen. There are other options too, but these suggestions will get you through sounding like a pro! Is what you've learned from NYS is worth a couple bucks to you? Please go subscribe or download your favorite track at Bandcamp. These videos take a lot of time to produce and I really can't do it without support from you guys! https://nowyoushred.bandcamp.com/ THANKS so much for your support! ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ Some Simple Shred Suggestions: ① Keep it simple, and repeat good ideas and sounds you like. ② Try to play what's in your head, not what you're looking at (like those chord grids up there) or what your fingers have "memorized". ③ Be expressive! Try to add hammer-ons, string rakes, palm mutes, pull-offs, bends, slides, vibrato, or whammy bar to as many notes as you can! Listen to the pros, I guarantee that's what they're doing, unless they're shredding at a million notes a second. ④ Most importantly: Learn some useful vocabulary! You must either copy some phrases from someone else, or come up with your own phrases to play. Music is a language with MANY dialects - you MUST learn the basics of the language to sound good, AND a the idiosyncrasies of the dialect to sound hip! That, or you're some kind of genius who automatically knows what do do (doubtful) so don't be lazy! Learn some basic blues licks, they will take you far! I learned some Dave Gilmour and Jimi Hendrix licks 20 years ago and I still play 'em all the time! ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ ♫ About ♫ My name is Renzo, I make these tracks. "Fat Old Sun" Chord Progression [G D F C ] Pink Floyd Style Psychedelic Rock Backing Track

04:43
Just made an EPIC new version of this - modeled on the BBC Live recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AA0wfszRfO4 This backing track is based on a popular chord progression in rock, I V bVII IV, in this case we are in the key of G. Of the many approaches to play over this, I like David Gilmore's on Pink Floyd's "Fat Old Sun". He plays a major pentatonic scale for each chord, in the keys of G D F and C. You could also get away with G major pentatonic, but some of the notes will be a little strange sounding... Good luck! Download the extended version of this jam track, a chord chart and scales, and stems for your own remixes HERE: https://nowyoushred.bandcamp.com/album/heavy-psychedelic-funk-e-aeolian-70-bpm-reissue Key: E Aeolian Chords: Em - C (Im bVI) This track was inspired by the epic jamming at the end of Pink Floyd's "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" The chords here are Im & VI in E Aeolian (a.k.a. natural minor); that means E minor pentatonic works great. Add the b5 blues note to that, and you have a minor blues scale, or add a 2 and a b6 and you get the AEOLIAN mode. Pro tip: you can hit the b5 blues note on the C chord and it magically turns it into C7. Try it if you dare... OR follow the diamond shapes on the bottom to play along with the harmony. Just these 2 little chords can keep me going for at least 10 minutes! How about you? Please comment if you have any questions, suggestions or requests. Thanks for checking out Now YOU Shred! When shredding: stuff to keep in mind: Keep it simple, and repeat good ideas and sounds you like. Try to play what's in your head, not what you're looking at (like those chord grids up there) or what your fingers have "memorized". Be expressive! Try to add hammer-ons, string rakes, palm mutes, pull-offs, bends, slides, vibrato, or whammy bar to as many notes as you can! Listen to the pros, I guarantee that's what they're doing, unless they're shredding at a million notes a second. Most importantly: Learn some useful vocabulary! You must either copy some phrases from someone else, or come up with your own phrases to play. Music is a language with MANY dialects - you MUST learn the basics of the language to sound good, AND a the idiosyncrasies of the dialect to sound hip! Slow 90's Style Stoner Funk Backing Track [C# Dorian]

05:12
https://nowyoushred.bandcamp.com/ This is the kind of groove you might want to use some cool effects on, at the very least, some spring reverb, or maybe some delay. But don't overdo it! Also, now might be the time to bust out that wah wah pedal, but use it for expression, don't just pump it to the beat like you're pumping up an old bike tire! Stick to the G major pentatonic and you're golden. Use the G Ionian mode and you will be richly rewarded! Remember to play what you hear, don't just let your fingers do the soloing. Think it, THEN play it. Try to sing what you play, don't be surprised by the notes that come out of your guitar. BE your solo, namaste and SHRED ON. Be expressive! Ab minor pentatonic OR Ab aeolian work over all of this. There's a really useful little thing that Jimmy Page does on his absolutely epic solo in Stairway To Heaven - he hits the b6 from the A Aeolian mode. Just add it to the minor pentatonic scale sometimes when the F chord comes around. Watch the scale grids! This ain't Coldplay, lol! Chords: A section [Gmaj7 F#m11 - B] B Section [Em9 A Dmaj9 B] This is a very ambiguous chord progression - but B minor pentatonic will get you through fine! Lots of other scales will work too. Comment if you have a different method! Like these tracks?
