RED - King Crimson Cover

06:33
"Avant-Garde" prog-rock tune by the band "King Crimson" from back in 1974. Hint: (BEST VIEWED WITH VOLUME TURNED WAY UP!) Ever since I saw those kids over at the "Paul Green School of Rock Music" (PGSORM) cover this with guest Adrian Belew, I knew I had to cover it too. It's easy to play, since it involves two-string chords and bends, as well as the slowest guitar solo the world has ever known! The band "King Crimson" never really hit it big, but their music has stood the test of time, and they have remained popular with fans and critics. The album "Red" reached #66 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. In 2001, the magazine "Q" named it as one of the "50 Heaviest Albums of All Time". Personnel on this album include Robert Fripp (guitars), John Wetton (bass) and Bill Bruford (drums). Grrr... My home stereo cut-out twice during this take. The balance potentiometer is worn out. Sorry about that! UPDATE: By popular demand, I have posted a lesson video for this tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVjGmLjWqRE Hope you enjoy it! Peace.

Gypsy Blood - Jimi Hendrix Cover(of a rare studio recording)

01:54
Ever since I heard this "nugget of joy" from Jimi on "TheEarthBlues" channel page, I knew I had to cover it. I believe Jimi played with his fingers (he did not use a pick), but I am not that dexterous. Also, I apologize for the flat "B" string! :-P Here is a link to the original studio recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxVgW2aBR3Q Thanks for watching! Peace~

Night Bird Flying - Jimi Hendrix Cover

04:00
Another obscure track from the album "Cry of Love". Rumor has it, that this song was written about Allison Steele, a late night DJ in the New York City area. Back in the late '60s, it was quite unusual for a woman to spin records on FM radio. Perhaps this is what impressed Jimi so much? Hmmm. My last post (Purple Haze) was probably the most covered Jimi tune on YouTube. This song is on the other end of the spectrum, as I could find only one other cover, and it was done by "taipobryan". (taipobryan rocks!) If you listen carefully to this tune, you can hear at least 3 different guitar tracks (maybe 4), so I had to pick and choose which guitar part to play as I worked through this cover. Hope you enjoy it! Peace.

Wait 'Till Tomorrow - Jimi Hendrix Cover

03:41
Another Saturday, another video! And, another selection from Axis: Bold as Love, called "Wait 'Till Tomorrow". This one features the neck/middle pickup switch position, which I am pretty sure Jimi used on the studio recording. There is a bonus snippet at the end of the video, which is the intro from "Castles Made of Sand". Peace and Happiness to all!

Beginnings (aka Jam Back at the House) - Jimi Hendrix Cover

04:22
Studio version of this song, which Jimi performed live at Woodstock..titled as "Jam Back at the House". I do not have a backing track, so I played along with the cut from the studio album "First Rays of the New Rising Sun". This song was omitted from the final cut of the posthumous album "Cry of Love", because the editing and production of the cut wasn't ready by the release date of the album. The solo near the end goes all over the place, so I got a little lost along the way! I also had the master volume on my amp set louder than normal, so my guitar could be heard over Jimi's guitar. Peace!

The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix Cover

03:26
So called "Classic Rock" radio stations have ruined some songs due to overplaying the same cuts. In spite of this, I still think "The Wind Cries Mary" is one of Jimi's most beautiful songs. Jimi is most often associated with guitar solos, but this song features some his best rhythm guitar work...often overlooked. Again, I am using a backing track with Jimi's guitar completely dropped out. Also, there is no echo/reverb in the vocals on the backing track. Very cool. And, by popular demand (not!), I decided to include my face in this video. Peace Love and Happiness to All!

Yours Is No Disgrace - Yes Cover (Rickenbacker 4001 Bass)

09:59
I wanted to give the old Rickenbacker some attention, so I felt it appropriate to learn a tune that originally used this fine instrument. More than that, it is "period correct", as Chris Squire played a similar model on the 1971 Yes studio album titled "The Yes Album", which this song originates. Other popular players of this particular bass include Geddy Lee (Rush), Paul McCartney, Cliff Burton (Metallica) and "Lemmy" Kilmister (Motorhead). This song was written as a message to returning Vietnam soldiers. The suggestion is...governments fight wars, not men and women - therefore "yours is no disgrace". Hope you enjoy that "Rickenbacker" twang! Peace.

06:19
OK FOLKS, For the record, I know I can't sing. But, there's a first time for everything! Also, since I can't sing and walk (play) at the same time without falling down, I recorded the vocals separately, and mixed it later. (In case you couldn't tell!) PLEASE be kind in your comments! I am not a professional! (DUH!) =P

Spanish Castle Magic - Jimi Hendrix Cover

03:18
Another selection from "Axis: Bold as Love". The Spanish Castle Club was a club in West Seattle, where Jimi played as a teenager. It "took a half a day to get there" since his friends car would often break down on the way to the club from Seattle's Central District. Peace Love and Happiness to all!

Heart of the Sunrise - Yes Cover (Rickenbacker 4001 Bass)

09:54
"Heart of the Sunrise" A cover from the 1972 album "Fragile", which was the 4th album from Yes, and probably the most popular album ever from this band. The musical texture of this song almost killed me! I'm not kidding. The various speeds and arrangements, plus the changes from 3/4 time to 4/4, and even 6/8 and a quirky 5/8 time proved to be most challenging. Boy, I'll tell you what! I WANTED THIS ONE BAD! I hope you like the "Hi-Tech" slide show in the middle. I worked hard on it! :P Enjoy! Peace~

Message to Love - Jimi Hendrix Cover

03:43
Getting back to Jimi! MATERIAL IS USED UNDER THE GUIDELINES OF "FAIR USE" IN TITLE 17 § 107 OF THE UNITED STATES CODE. SUCH MATERIAL REMAINS THE COPYRIGHT OF THE ORIGINAL HOLDER AND IS USED HERE FOR THE PURPOSES OF EDUCATION, COMPARISON, AND CRITICISM ONLY. This is from the posthumous album "Crash Landing", which was released in March of 1975. Crash Landing was an ambitious project led by Alan Douglas for Reprise Records to "create" new Jimi Hendrix songs to satisfy fans. Douglas created the new material by reviewing hundreds of hours of old tapes from the vaults. Douglas pulled unfinished songs from the tapes and completed them using studio musicians to overdub Hendrix' original tapes. I don't know who exactly performed on the album, but I do know Mitch Mitchell played a large part in getting it right. I also recognize the drums and vocals in this to be the late Buddy Miles. Enjoy! Peace as always~

Village of the Sun - Zappa (ZPZ) Cover

04:00
A more or less nostalgic song about FZ's early years which were mostly spent in Southern California, near the Mojave Desert. Sun Village, California is the setting for this song. I really like the melody, and the chord progressions are so uniquely "Zappa". The chords are very hard to pick out, so I'm sure some are not exactly correct. The video you see on my laptop (in the shot) is from the ZappaPlaysZappa 2006 Tour DVD. Special guests for the tour include Steve Vai, Terry Bozzio and Napoleon Murphy Brock who sings lead vocals here. Hope you enjoy my first video endeavor into Frank's music. Many thanks to Dweezil! Peace.

South Side of the Sky - Yes Cover

07:39
Another selection from the Yes album "Fragile". Steve Howe's guitar style is very different from what I normally play (read: Jimi), but it was fun and challenging! At the 2003 Montreux Jazz Festival, at the introduction of this song, Jon Anderson said, "This song is about climbing mountains...It's dangerous, but we must climb mountains every day." The instrument swap was an idea I came up with one day, which in reality, was the only way to cover this cool song. =D Hope you like it! Peace as always~

Up From the Skies - Jimi Hendrix Cover

02:59
WahWah Workout! I am using a Dunlop GCB-95 CryBaby, which does a good job of emulating Jimi's VOX wah-wah when you limit the motion to the lower-mid range. I also have my reverb set to 10, but my Mesa/Boogie DC-5's reverb tank isn't real responsive (a common characteristic of the DC-5). Hmmm. I do not have a good backing track for this one, so I simply pulled the left channel jack from my CD player, and hit the mono button on my stereo receiver to balance out the audio in the room. Unfortunately, Jimi's vocals are missing at points in the song. "So where do I purchase my ticket? I'd just like to have a ringside seat. I wanna know about the New Mother Earth! I wanna hear and see everything. I wanna hear and see everything. I wanna hear and see everything! Yeah! If my daddy could see me now..." Peace Love and Happiness to All!

King Crimson "RED" Lesson Video (by popular demand)

09:59
By popular demand, I am making this lesson video "public". It was originally "private", but apparently many of you want to learn it! I recorded this in one take, and did not take any time to clean it up, so there are a few mistakes. Of course, this is how "I" think it is played. I don't think Robert Fripp did it this way, but it works for me! =D Here is the link to my cover of this tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMBm7OQrQko Hope it helps!

"Who Did You Think I Was" - John Mayer Trio Cover

03:08
Back in 2005, John Mayer already had two successful "pop" albums under his belt, so he decided to move his music in a new direction. He wanted to pay homage to the great musicians of his childhood days. So he formed the John Mayer Trio to play, what he called, "power rockin', electric guitar, in-your-face blues." I first saw him perform this song in a video clip posted on the front page of CNN.com. I was blown away by the awesome Stratocaster tone and chord progressions that reminded me of Jimi Hendrix AND Stevie Ray Vaughn. Studio aces Pino Palladino (on bass) and Steve Jordan (on drums) completed the "Trio". In March 2006, John Mayer had announced that the "Trio" had played their final performance at a concert. Hope you like my cover! Peace.

You know what they say...variety is the spice of life! :) "What is Hip" is from the 1973 album simply named "Tower of Power". It was their third album, and their most successful album to date. It reached #10 on the BillBoard 200. This album also spawned their most successful single "So Very Hard To Go". So, get in line for a SOUL INJECTION! Hope 'ya dig it! Peace~

Something- Beatles/Hendrix "practice" (thx to losbeatniks)

03:16
This video is dedicated to my wife! This tune has a few major mistakes, so plan to re-post a new version some day. It's a little out of my league, but I tried it anyway. I think I have carpal tunnel in my index finger! If Jimi could have played a Beatles song, it may have sounded something like this (without the errors, of course). Many thanks to YouTube member "losbeatniks" for the inspiration to learn this song. His version is the best! Go watch it. One day, perhaps, I will be as good a player as him! Peace and Happiness to all!!!
