Yeonmi Park’s story: Escapee from North Korea speaks out

02:02
Meet Yeonmi Park. At 21 she looks like a typical university student enjoying the perks of living in Seoul, South Korea’s ultra-modern capital city. It’s hard to believe that she was actually born and grew up in a small port village in North Korea, along the river that defines the border between the North and it’s largest neighbor, China. Today Yeonmi is an outspoken activist, telling her family’s story about their harrowing escape from North Korea, ruled by one of the world’s most reclusive and repressive regimes. At a young age Yeonmi was indoctrinated with North Korean ideology, where Kim Jong-il and his family are treated as gods and any dissent is punished with prison and torture. The government tightly controls everything and limits citizens’ access to the outside world. When Yeonmi was just 13 years old she was invited to watch the execution of her best friend’s mother. The woman had been arrested for watching South Korean movies and sharing the DVDs with friends. She along with several others were executed by firing squad for their crime. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. JonBenet Ramsey case: New DNA testing planned after report revealed flaws - TomoNews

02:06
BOULDER, COLORADO — New DNA testing is planned in the investigation of the unsolved murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, who was found dead in 1996. An exclusive report revealed flaws in the interpretation of previous DNA testing. According to a joint report by Daily Camera and 9News, the DNA samples from JonBenet’s long johns belong to at least two people, in addition to herself. Also, the DNA profile gathered from JonBenet’s underwear could be a composite and not just from a single individual. The new findings make the link between the DNA found in the underwear and the long johns extremely weak, and could result in the DNA findings being considered evidence. Mary Lacy, the district attorney at the time, was given this analysis of the DNA. However, she concluded that the DNA found in JonBenet’s underwear and the DNA found in her long johns pointed to an unknown male. This conclusion exonerated the Ramsey family from suspicion in 2008. Lacy did not respond to requests for comment after the report revealed the DNA findings failed to support her decision to exonerate the Ramsey family. JonBenet was found murdered in the basement of the family house in Boulder, Colorado. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey said she realized her daughter was missing after finding a ransom letter on the kitchen staircase the morning after Christmas and quickly phoned the police. However, police did not find her body during the initial search of the house. It was her father, John Ramsey, who found JonBenet’s body in the wine cellar room in the basement that afternoon. JonBenet was duct taped over the month and her wrists were tied. A garrote was found around her neck and her skull was fractured due to a heavy blow. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Racism at Chili’s: Black veteran has free meal revoked after Trump supporter complaint - TomoNews

03:05
CEDAR HILL, TEXAS — A military veteran taking advantage of a complimentary meal at a Chili’s in North Texas had his food taken away after his service was called into question by a fellow customer. Ernest Walker proudly served in 25th Infantry of the U.S. Army, Division Tropic Lightning. On November 11, the army vet was waiting for his food with his service dog, Barack. The restaurant offers all active service members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day as a thank you. The meal took half an hour to be served, and as Walker had to go, he asked the waitress to put it in a to-go box for him. As he was waiting for his doggy bag, he says an elderly man wearing a Trump t-shirt walked over and questioned him about his time in the military. The man, who himself claimed to be a World War 2 vet serving in Germany, didn’t believe Walker was actually a veteran. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told Walker another guest said he wasn’t a veteran because he was wearing his hat indoors. After providing his discharge papers and his military ID, the manager then told him the guest also said his dog was not a service dog. That’s when Walker started recording the incident on his smartphone. After arguing for the duration of the video, the manager took Walker’s to-go box away and told him to “have a great day.” Following the unfortunate exchange, Walker posted the video to Facebook, and the story has since gotten back to Chili’s, who have responded saying the situation has been escalated to the highest levels of the company. So far, Walker hasn’t yet been contacted by anyone at Chili’s or its ownership group, but the two sides are expected to meet this week. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ISIS attack: Trapped Russian soldier calls airstrike on himself to kill ISIS fighters - TomoNews

01:27
PALMYRA, SYRIA — A transcript of the final communications between soldier Alexander Prokhorenko and Russian Special Forces has been released, detailing the final moments before his called in his own death, trapped in ISIS territory. Prokhorenko was stationed near Palmyra, Syria, in charge of directing airstrikes on ISIS targets. Alone, he suddenly realized he was dangerously low on ammunition and surrounded by terrorists, with no possible escape route. He radioed his commander to communicate his dire situation, and instructed him to go ahead with airstrikes, taking out ISIS jihadists along with his own life in the resulting attack. According to the transcript, Prokhorenko's words were "I am surrounded, they are outside, I don't want them to take me and parade me, conduct the airstrike, they will make a mockery of me and this uniform." His commander refused, ordering Prokhorenko to get to safety before any such command would be ordered. The brave Prokhorenko told him "I want to die with dignity and take all these bastards with me. Please, my last wish, conduct the airstrike, they will kill me either way." His commander acknowledged his plight, ordering in the airstrikes, and sealing Prokhorenko's fate. In his final transmission, he thanked his commander, said he had "the best wife in the world," and was serving the nation he loved. His wife, Ekaterina, was reportedly unaware that her husband was even serving in Syria. They'd been married only 18 months, and reports indicate they were expecting their first child. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ‘Shopping while black’: Racial profiling caught on tape, Rashid Polo viral Vine video

01:43
Rashid Polo, of Rochester, Minnesota, is an overnight internet celebrity whose recent Vine videos are shedding light on a sensitive topic … shopping while black. While shopping at a convenience store back in February, Polo noticed a pattern developing. No matter where he went in the store, a suspicious attendant always seemed to follow. As she busied herself with random tasks, she cast vilifying stares at Polo, who eventually had enough. He whipped out his cell phone and began recording. If you’re saying to yourself right now that racial shopping discrimination doesn’t exist, chances are, you’re a white person. Barney’s New York, to give just one example, has repeatedly been accused of mistreating black shoppers. In the case of 19-year-old Trayon Christian, undercover police officers arrested him when he walked out of Barneys with a $350 belt, despite having shown them proof of purchase. Even Oprah can’t avoid racial profiling. Last year, a Swiss clerk refused to show the media mogul a handbag, saying it would “cost to much.” Polo’s second “shopping while black” Vine video has garnered 14 million loops in a little over a week and attracted more than 15,000 followers so far. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Panama canal expansion: how it works

01:24
The expansion of the Panama Canal will not be ready for its 100th anniversary on August 15 as initially hoped by canal authorities. Aimed now to be completed by June 2015, the project was proposed in 2006, began in 2007 and has cost so far US$ 6.5 billion, Newsweek reported. Connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, the canal currently uses locks in which water flows by gravity and raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level. Ships can then travel through artificial lakes and channels until they reach another set of locks leading to the sea on the other side. The expansion of the canal will feature new sets of locks that will allow the 81-km-long channel to accommodate even bigger vessels. The new locks will be larger but use less water than the existing ones. Basins next to them will recycle water from the locks as they are emptied, and use this water to partially refill the locks when another ship passes through. Water from the canal’s lakes will also be used to fill the new locks. The new locks will be able to handle ships that are longer, taller and wider. Per-ship cargo capacity will nearly triple, from the current roughly 4,500 standard-container limit to roughly 12,000 standard containers. These changes will make the Panama Canal more competitive with the alternative Suez Canal route, which can currently accommodate much larger ships The Panama began operating in in 1914. It cost about US$420 million and took 40 years to complete. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Selfie gone wrong: idiot iPad thieves arrested after accidentally uploading photos to iCloud

02:07
A Houston robbery victim got his iPad back after the idiot thieves who took it inadvertently identified themselves after taking celebratory photos on the device, which automatically backed up to the owner’s iCloud account. "I think they felt elated that they got away with such a big score," Randy Schaefer told KTRK-TV. Schaefer’s white F-150 truck was parked outside his River Oaks home on January 8th when two suspects broke in and stole his iPad, $5,000 in cash and his MacBook Pro. It wasn’t until last Friday morning, though, that he discovered the culprits behind the theft when he checked his iCloud photo stream and found 17 selfies taken by two mysterious men. The photos showed the suspects posing with stacks of $100 bills and going as far as to put them in their mouths. A Youtube video surfaced Friday night showing the men throwing up gang signs saying, “this is what you get from a good night’s hustle.” Schaefer said the selfies were taken on his iPad at a Burger King just two miles down the street from his home. Some of the other stolen items were found in an alley behind a Starbucks located near the Burger King. Schaefer believes the suspects connected to the Starbucks Wi-Fi and synced the selfies accidentally to his iCloud account. D.B. Cooper mystery: 45 years on, skyjacker who stole $200,000 remains an enigma - TomoNews

07:05
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — It’s almost 45 years since a hijacker known by the pseudonym “D.B. Cooper” jumped out of plane above America’s Pacific Northwest clutching a $200,000 cash ransom. More than four decades later, the crime has never been solved and the FBI stopped actively investigating the case in July. The legend of D.B. Cooper began at the Northwest Orient Airlines flight counter at Portland International Airport on Nov. 24, 1971, when a man identifying himself as “Dan Cooper” paid cash for a one-way ticket on Flight 305 to Seattle, a mere 30-minute journey. On board, Cooper showed a flight attendant an explosive device in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby at the airport in Seattle. The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, where a bag filled with cash and parachutes was delivered, and Cooper released all 36 passengers, along with two flight attendants. The plane took off again, bound for Mexico City, scheduled to stop to refuel in Reno, Nevada. As Cooper sat alone in the cabin, crew members in the cockpit noticed a sudden upward tilt in the plane’s tail section, which required trimming to get the aircraft back to its flight level. Investigators believe this could be the moment D.B. Cooper made his exit by leaping into the freezing cold air, through the clouds, and to an unknown fate. In all the years that have followed, only two pieces of hard evidence have ever been found. In 1978, a hunter found the fragment of a placard for lowering the back stairs of a Boeing 727 along the flight path of the plane. Two years later, about 20 miles southwest of Ariel, Washington a boy discovered $5,800 in damaged cash from Cooper’s haul. The FBI has investigated more than a thousand suspects in the case, but has never been able to identify D.B. Cooper. The bureau officially ended active investigation of the case in July, citing a lack of new information. More than $194,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars today, has never been recovered. The FBI suspects that D.B. Cooper didn’t survive the jump, but their guess about what really happened is as good as yours or mine. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Soldier jumps on grenade: Hero Marine who saved squad in Iraq denied Medal of Honor - TomoNews

01:38
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — After years of fighting for a Medal of Honor nomination, the family of a heroic Marine sergeant has given up and instead accepted a Navy Cross on his behalf. Sgt. Rafael Peralta died in Iraq after absorbing the blow of a grenade that would likely have killed members of his team. He was just 25. Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel rejected the Medal of Honor bid because the details of Peralta’s death are still under dispute. On the morning of November 15th 2004, Peralta’s team was clearing houses in Fallujah. Inside the fourth house, the team threw open a door to find several insurgents armed with AK-47s. The Marines exchanged fire with the men and killed one of the insurgents. During the fire exchange, a bullet struck Rafael, severely injuring him. Reports indicate Peralta was struck by a bullet from his own team as he tried to move out of the line of fire. As the remaining insurgents retreated, a grenade landed next to Peralta. Initial reports indicated he pulled the grenade under his body in an effort to shield his men from the explosion. But later reports contradicted that story. “I can remember people saying it would be the right thing to do, to say that he did more than he did,” said Reggie Brown, who was inside the house with Peralta, during a 2014 interview with the Washington Post. “I disagree with everything my fellow Marines proclaim to have seen,” Brown said. Other Marines have disputed Brown’s statement. Regardless, Peralta’s body did absorb the blow of the grenade, which normally has a 5-meter killing radius. On Monday morning, Peralta’s mother accepted the Navy Cross, which is the second highest award a Marine can receive. Peralta’s brother spoke at the ceremony and read the last letter he received from the fallen hero. In it, Peralta told his little brother to “just remember that I already lived my life to the fullest.” Peralta was a Mexican immigrant, who reportedly enlisted in the military the same day he received his green card. “His legacy will carry on as long as the Marine Corps stays alive,” Rick Peralta said during the ceremony. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Epic police chase: Lookout Mountain, Colorado carjacking suspect, Chris Sullivan caught on camera

Christopher Sullivan evaded officers for over two hours on Wednesday in a police chase involving six crime scenes and three stolen vehicles at Lookout Mountain in Colorado. || Watch more crazy police car chases videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5_Zg40DC3OEoe-60fHIcvR5jV_4Lns2C Sullivan was pulled over by an officer patrolling Lookout Mountain. When the officer returned to his squad car, Sullivan sped away along with a female juvenile accomplice. The two managed to evade the officer’s pursuit and 30 minutes later carjacked a woman driving a Subaru. They wrecked the Subaru and carjacked a man in a white pickup, who ran for the bushes when Sullivan opened fire. Sullivan then wrecked his newly acquired pickup and fled the scene on foot. Police enlisted the help of a local news station helicopter to help track the suspects. Armed with an assault rifle and handgun, Sullivan was on his own now as the girl ditched him and surrendered herself to police. Sullivan checked for keys in dump trucks parked in a parking lot but didn’t find any. His next stop was somebody’s home. After looking for keys in their truck outside, he made his way into the home, occupied by two people who had no idea that Sullivan had entered until they heard him rip through their garage door in an SUV. After immobilizing the SUV while attempting to drive over rough terrain, Sullivan continued on foot once again. He stood on the highway, appearing to hijack yet another vehicle. Officer Fred Haggett arrived on the scene driving a police motorcycle and arrested the Sullivan. No injuries were reported over the course of the two-hour crime spree. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Boeing 787 Dreamliner: Secret rest cabin for pilots and flight attendants revealed - TomoNews

01:41
CHICAGO — The secret compartments where cabin crew rest on board long-haul flights have been revealed in photos online. Photographs of secret rest cabins for pilots and flight attendants on Boeing’s flagship 787 Dreamliner were published by Australian website News.com.au. On a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the pilot’s rest cabin is usually positioned behind the cockpit and above the first class compartment. The stairway is disguised behind a security-coded door. The cabin usually has one business class seat and two bunk beds, separated by thick curtains to give the pilots a small amount of privacy. The rest cabin for flight attendants is usually located at the rear of the plane, just above the economy passenger compartment. Depending on the design of each plane, a compartment can usually accommodate at least five flight attendants. Even though some crew members complain that it feels like sleeping in a coffin, posters commenting on the story on Twitter wondered if similar rest cabins could be designed for passengers too. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Open carry stand off: Gun owner stares down three cops in Connecticut Subway store - TomoNews

02:53
BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT — An open-carry gun owner who recorded video of police confronting him inside a Connecticut Subway store on Tuesday later posted the clip online in an incident that is sure to spark debate. The video opens with the gun owner being repeatedly asked by one officer to show his permit. The gun owner politely declines each request, saying he is acting in accordance with the law, while insisting he only wants to buy a sandwich. Eventually, the officer's superior enters the restaurant and tells the man they have received a complaint. While they continue to argue the technicalities of the state's gun laws a third officer arrives on the scene. The store owner then tells the gun owner he is refusing to serve the man, who reluctantly leaves the store. He then tells the officers he is going to Dunkin Donuts before calling them "dickheads." A second video posted to LiveLeak shows the gun owner and the third policemen arguing in a different location. During the conversation, the police officer admits that although he cannot order him to put his gun away and cannot order him to present your permit, but a business owner who is uncomfortable with him being in the store has the option to refuse his business. The gun owner then accuses the cop of harassing people for not breaking the law and asks him to go and find some real criminals. According to an article in the New Haven Register it is legal to carry a firearm in public view in Connecticut, although with a few caveats. In the article state police Lt. J. Paul Vance says, "If you have a permit to carry, you can carry a handgun on your person as long as it doesn't cause annoyance or alarm." While state police training bulletin no. 2013-01 says there is no statute which makes it illegal for someone with a valid pistol permit to openly carry unless it creates a 'breach of peace.' Local open carry advocates, meanwhile, dispute the definition of a 'breach of peace,' saying people 'feeling uncomfortable' doesn't qualify. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kowloon Walled City: a 3D model of the densest place of earth

Check out our official website: http://us.tomonews.net/ Check out our Android app: http://goo.gl/PtT6VD Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f ------------------------------------------------------------- April 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the completion of the demolition of the Kowloon Walled City, a largely ungoverned slum that was once considered the densest settlement on Earth. The city, a unique urban experiment, housed about 50,000 people in just 300 buildings, which were crammed together into a living space that followed its own set of laws. Governed by the Chinese mafia known as 'the Triads', the city became famous in the 1980s for its brothels, casinos and opium dens. Living conditions were squalid, with cramped and dirty spaces, no direct sunlight, patchy or non-existent electricity, and no garbage collection. Nevertheless, the city's population grew fivefold in just 40 years, from 10,000 after World War II, reaching 50,000 people by 1990. Rent was cheap, with an average of just HKD35 a month (about US$4 today) and no taxes were charged or paid. It was therefore very attractive for doctors and dentists and manufacturers who could practice without licenses, or people who could not afford to live elsewhere. The city's unique political status and anarchic conditions, however, made it an embarrassment for the British government, who after a difficult eviction process, started tearing it down in 1993. The demolition ended in April 1994. A year later, the place was transformed into a Qing Dynasty style garden. This animation recreates the historical process that lead to the creation of this fascinating city, and eventually to its disappearance. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Teen arrested after rooftopping at 1 World Trade Center

01:22
A 16-year-old New Jersey boy was arrested for criminal trespass after breaking into the construction site of 1 World Trade Center and climbing up to the top of the building early Sunday morning in New York. Justin Casquejo of Weehawken managed to evade security and climb to the spire of the Freedom Tower, spending more than a hour on the building. Casquejo, who is a parkour enthusiast and no stranger to scaling tall buildings, wriggled through a foot-wide hole in the fence around the site. He got to the sixth floor through the scaffolding, then took an elevator to the 88th floor. From there, he took the stairs to the 104th floor where he slipped past a sleeping security guard. From the rooftop he made his way to the spire on a ladder. At the top of the building, he took photographs, then eventually worked his way back down. He was arrested on his way out at about 6 a.m. and was later charged with one count of criminal trespass in the third degree and one count of trespass. He was released without bail. Casquejo's stunt called into question the effectiveness of the building's security system. The completed building will have a system estimated to cost $40 million. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Dog shoots owner in the back in freak hunting accident - TomoNews

07:32
LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO — A hunter in New Mexico nearly crossed over to the great beyond after his doggie best friend pulled the trigger on him. The Las Cruces Sun News reports that Sonny Gilligan had gone to hunt jackrabbits in the desert west of LAs Cruces on Thursday, and had taken his dogs Charlie, Scooter, and Cowboy with him. While in the backseat, his 120-pound lab-rottweiler mix Charlie got his foot on Gilligan's shotgun. When the dog slipped and fell off the seat, his paw caught the trigger, causing the firearm to shoot. The bullet tore through the driver's seat straight through Gilligan's back, breaking a couple of his ribs and shattering his collarbone. Amazingly, the 74-year-old managed to call for help. The lucky man had to undergo a bunch of surgeries, but is now on the way to recovery. Still, all he could think about was his boys. Poor Charlie and his brothers were sent to doggie jail, aka animal services, after the shooting, but have since been busted out by Gilligan's human son. Gilligan says he's forgiven Charlie for very nearly sending him to the afterlife, adding that it really was just a bizarre freak accident. Abu Sin: Saudi teen jailed for YouNow video-chatting American vlogger Christina Crockett - TomoNews

01:34
SAUDI ARABIA — A teenager from Saudi Arabia has landed himself behind bars for flirting with the forbidden fruit. A series of video chats between the young man and a blonde girl from California have breached Sharia law and the country’s internet regulations. For weeks, the Arabic-speaking teen known as Abu Sin had been video chatting with 21-year-old Christina Crockett. The two seemed to be having a good time getting to know each other, even though they didn’t speak the same language. In the videos, they would frequently tell each other “I love you” and exchange heart-shaped hand gestures. Their bond caught the attention of the Internet when the video chats were re-posted to YouTube, but unfortunately for Abu Sin, the police were none too pleased. They arrested him for “unethical behaviour” claiming the “enticing” videos made Saudi Arabia look bad in the eyes of the world. The 19-year-old was placed in jail for ten days, but has since been released on bond. On October 9, he made a video repenting for his sinful ways, but could still be facing a five-year prison sentence and a fine of $800,000. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Poor shaming: 100 kids banned from New York carnival as friends who paid $10 ticket play - TomoNews

01:38
NEW YORK — A public school principal in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York is taking some serious heat from everyone from parents to politicians over her decision to ban 100 kids from a school carnival because their families could not afford the $10 entrance fee. Principal Joan Monroe reportedly decided that allowing the kids who did not pay to enter the carnival fun area would be unfair to the more affluent children who were able to afford the fee. Reports in the New York Post said many of the children who were not allowed to attend were from immigrant Chinese families and instead of enjoying a day of school-sponsored fun, they were required to sit in an auditorium instead. Teachers from the school reported many of the children wept hysterically as they were unable to understand why they were not allowed to enjoy the event, which included a bouncy castle, inflatable slides, kids rides, food, drinks and a DJ playing children's tunes. The school principal later allegedly made a list of all the parents that did pay the entrance fee and send them gift bags. The incident caught the attention of the local school board, politicians and the president of the company that set up the carnival attraction. The company's president, Gary Pincus, said his Send in the Clowns Entertainment company would happily put on a free party for the banned kids, explaining he found it unacceptable that children from low income families were turned away. Other establishments and companies have also offered to host free events for the children that were not permitted to attend. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. WWII bomb: Unexploded bomb that could destroy an entire block defused in Frankfurt - TomoNews

06:06
FRANKFURT, GERMANY — Explosives experts in Frankfurt on Sunday defused a massive bomb — a remnant of the last World War more than 70 years ago. CNN reports that the 1.4 ton HC 4000 bomb was found buried at a construction site close to Goethe University's Frankfurt campus on Tuesday. The discovery prompted authorities to cordon off a 1.5-kilometer radius danger zone around the explosive. Over 60,000 people were evacuated from the area, which was home to hospitals, retirement homes, and the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank. Dubbed 'Blockbuster', the British World War II-era bomb could reportedly generate an explosion capable of flattening an entire block. Of the estimated 1.5 million tons of munitions dropped on Germany by Allied forces, some 15% failed to explode and ended up getting buried, according to the New York Times. Experts say over 2,000 tons of unexploded weaponry are found in the country each year. Despite having a dedicated bomb-disposal unit, Germany's unexploded bombs remain a problem. The aging munitions could become more brittle and unstable, and are reportedly being spotted in harder-to-reach areas, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. First artificial heart implant offers new hope to patients with heart diseases

01:40
Originally published on December 30, 2013 An artificial heart created by French biomedical firm Carmat that is designed last to up to five years was implanted for the first time on December 18 in a 75-year-old patient who, according to doctors, is progressing well. Until now, the longest a patient has lived with an artificial heart is just under four years. The new heart developed by Carmat is designed to replace a patient's real heart, or at least provide a longer bridge of time while the patient waits for a heart transplant. The Carmat artificial heart's shape and size are similar to those of a natural heart. It has two ventricles and four valves that can reproduce the pulsatile flow of blood circulation and accelerate and reduce cardiac rhythm in according to the level of effort being exerted by the patient. It is made from chemically treated animal tissue to lessen the risk of blood clots and rejection by the immune system. To power the heart Carmat uses two external lithium-ion batteries connected to electric wires behind the left ear and linked to the heart through under-the-skin wires. The system is portable, allowing the patient to return home by carrying it on a trolley or on his shoulders. Nearly 100,000 people in Europe and the U.S. are in need of a heart transplant, according to Carmat. Men are more likely to be implanted with Carmat's artificial heart, as heart failure affects more men than women, and the device is sized such that it can fit in 86 percent of men but only roughly 20 percent of women, according to a Reuters report. A U.S. rival to Carmat, an artificial heart called AbioCor, is authorised in the U.S. for patients with end-stage heart failure or who have a life expectancy of less than 30 days, are not eligible for a natural heart plant and have no other viable treatment options. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Panama Papers: How do offshore shell companies work? - TomoNews

01:55
PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. Although the spotlight is currently on Panama, tax havens like Panama exist all over the world. People use them to circumvent regulations that protect transparency, as well as to avoid paying taxes in their home countries. Shell companies are often established in cities and countries that have lax rules governing transparency and financial disclosure, or more lenient criminal laws. Using tax havens isn't always about paying less taxes. Wealth isn't necessarily kept within tax haven countries. Often such places only serve as addresses for shell companies, which exist solely on paper, and are created for as little as US$1,000, reported Vice in a 2014 article. On paper, these shell companies act as the intermediaries that own the wealth, whether that asset is a painting or a Swiss bank account. Because of the complex organizational structure of these shell companies, it's very difficult to figure out who a company actually belongs to. Setting up a shell company is not illegal and its existence is not always for a nefarious reason. A shell company may be established as a way to for one to save up funds to open a business. It may also act as a front for a project that a well-known company wants to keep from the public's eye until it's ready. According to Vox, Apple for example, may have created a shell company called SixtyEight Research as a front for a car project. However, these shells are often used as tax or legal loopholes, as setting up a shell company doesn't require much identification, which allows their ultimate owners to evade scrutiny. UC Berkeley economics professor Gabriel Zucman estimates that there is least US$7.6 trillion kept in offshore tax havens. However, due to the nature of tax havens, it's difficult to know for sure what the true amount is. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Scientists discover what triggers allergic reactions to cats

01:13
Originally published on July 25, 2013 Scientists in the UK have discovered how allergic reactions to cats are triggered. A research team from the University of Cambridge discovered that the Fel d 1 protein found in cat dander is the most common cause of severe allergic reactions to cats. Cat dander is microscopic pieces of dry skin cells, which are often accompanied by dried saliva from grooming. It was also discovered that when environmental bacterial toxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is present, it intensifies the body's inflammatory response to the cat protein Fel d 1. The scientists also identified the part of the immune system that recognises the LPS contaminated Fel d 1 is the pathogen recognition receptor Toll-like receptor 4, an important protein in the activation of the innate immune system. They used a drug to inhibit the TLR4 response which then blocked the effects of the cat dander protein on human cells and thereby preventing an inflammatory response. The research is expected to lead to new and improved treatments for cat and possibly dog allergy sufferers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Kidnapped child saved: Hero pizza shop worker sees Amber Alert, saves Texas boy - TomoNews

01:05
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — The family of a kidnapped south Texas 7-year-old have an unlikely hero to thank after an alert employee at a Corpus Christi pizza shop helped identify the vehicle of the boy’s abductor last week, according to a KRISTV.com report. Courtney Best, 26, stepped out of the Papa Murphy's Pizza store where she worked last Thursday for what was supposed to have been a routine smoke break, but turned out to be anything but. The restaurant supervisor received an Amber Alert for a missing boy on her phone at virtually the same moment, as luck would have it, she saw a white car fitting the exact description of the abductor's vehicle pulling into her restaurant's parking lot. Best next spotted the apparent suspect as he walked with a scared-looking little boy into a nearby store and instantly sprung into action. "The man was walking across the parking lot, looking at me because I was the only person out here with the little boy. (The boy) looked scared," Best told the local station. "My stomach started knotting up, so I was like, ahh, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna check and see." She next carefully checked the car’s license plate before calling police who promptly arrested the suspect, one Channing Galbraith, and saved the young boy, Nicholas Gomez, who had been abducted from his home the day before. Galbraith reportedly remains in the slammer and faces charges related to the alleged abduction. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kangaroo attack: Jogger gets 35 stitches from vicious mauling by 2m-tall crazy kangaroo - TomoNews

05:54
TEMPLESTOWE, AUSTRALIA — A personal trainer in Melbourne had to have emergency surgery after being brutally mauled by a large male kangaroo. The Manningham Leader reports that Debbie Urquhart was jogging through a bush track in Templestowe Saturday morning and didn’t see the towering threat that was coming her way. A fully grown 2-meter-tall male kangaroo suddenly jumped at her and knocked her down. It kicked and clawed at her ferociously, shredding her clothes and ripping through her flesh. The 54-year-old played dead to try and get the roo to stop attacking, and soon the big boy backed off. Urquhart got back up and walked half a kilometer back home while bleeding from her injuries. She was rushed to the hospital by husband Robert and ended up getting more than 35 stitches. A kangaroo expert told the ABC that this particular kangaroo’s show of aggression was rare, as unprovoked attacks rarely occur. And while the harrowing encounter hasn’t slowed Urquhart down, she says she probably won’t be going near the tracks anytime soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. 3D printed battery: new smart inks to produce lithium-ion microbatteries

01:21
Originally published on January 03, 2014 A new kind of "smart ink" developed by Harvard scientist Jennifer Lewis, head of the university's Lewis Lab, could enable traditional 3D printers to print tiny battery electrodes the size less than a human hair. To make the ink, nanoparticles of lithium titanium oxide are added to a vial of deionized water and ethylene glycol. Ceramic balls are used as agitators to break down the particles. The mixture is spun for 24 hours, after which the balls and larger particles are removed using filters and a centrifuge. The resulting ink is placed in a syringe, which is then inserted into a high-pressure dispenser housed in a traditional 3D printer. The custom-made syringe's nozzle tips, as small as one micrometer wide at the opening, allow precise patterning. The ink is solid under normal conditions, but liquefies under high pressure, so it returns to solid form once it leaves the syringe. The ink is used to print the battery's anode and cathode layer by layer following digital instructions. Finally, a case filled with electrolyte solutions encloses the electrodes to create a working lithium-ion microbatteries. Using this technology, microbatteries could be in between other components to help reduce the size of the gadgets. The microbatteries could supply electricity to tiny devices in fields from medicine to communications, including many that currently only exist in labs because batteries currently available on the market are either not small enough or lack sufficient energy to power them. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
