How To Know When To Change Your Chain, Cassette And Chainrings

04:45
Your bike chain, cassette and chainrings will all wear out eventually, but how do you know when to change them? Here's our guide. Follow GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN A newly minted drivetrain makes your bike feel great, and keeping on top of chain wear and old parts on your bike will make for cheaper repalcements as our chain wears faster than the cassette and chainrings. Measuring chain stretch or wear can be done with a specifc tool, a ruler or just by pulling the chain. Chainrings generally last a long while - and the tell tales sign is "shark's teeth". The cassette is similar - "shark's teeth" or "ghost shifting" just after you've changed your chain. Making sure you change your chain, cassette and chainrings as they wear will ultimately make your riding cost less, so get measuring your chain now! Buy GCN Cycling Kit! Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN LIKE, SHARE and let us know if you commute to work by bike. Dan, Matt, Simon and Tom just couldn't agree on what was the best way to commute the 20km back to the office after filming a news show. So, they had a race. There was no prize for the winner, just the pride in proving that your chosen commute was the fastest, although there's still some debate about what's the best, so comment below and let us know your thoughts on that. Dan chose his folding bike, Matt chose his relaxed road bike with mudguards, Simon rode an aero racing bike, and Tom took the off road route on his 'cross bike. How To Train For Long Rides

04:19
In association with Scott. Here are our tips for improving your endurance without spending more time training. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Very few of us have the time to do 20 hour training weeks or to spend hours recovering. So, this video has a few tips that will help you to get fitter and ride for longer without increasing the amount of time that you spend training. Consistency is key. It's far better to ride 5 times a week for 1 hour rather than do one 5 hour ride. Consistency of training will help you to improve your endurance. Pre-breakfast training is great; you can use it as your pre-work commute - just make sure that you have a good breakfast afterwards. 'Sweet spot' training is a popular term, but what does it mean? Dan got some big gains in his pro career from using sweet spot, so, in this video, he shares one of his favourite sessions. Buy GCN Cycling Kit! Top 10 Things The UCI Have Banned

Subscribe to GCN on YouTube: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Developments in technology and knowledge regarding sport science and aerodynamics mean that cycling is constantly looking for ways to improve performance. 6 Climbing Mistakes To Avoid When Cycling | GCN Pro Tips

04:17
Riding uphill is hard enough as it is, don't make it tougher than it needs to be. Matt is here with 6 mistakes to avoid. Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! http://gcn.eu/f5 Let us know mistakes that you avoid when climbing in the comments below 👇 To make climbs more pleasant, and allow you to get up and over them faster, ex-professional cyclist Matt Stephens presents 6 mistakes that you need to avoid In no particular order they are as follows: 1. Don't go into the red! Pace yourself, don't go flat out at the bottom. 2. Under gearing, spin to win is all well and good, but spinning at a very high cadence is simply not efficient. 3. Over gearing. You may damage your knees, and simply you are not mechanically efficient when grinding a big gear. Plus, you run the risk of actually coming to a standstill if the gradient is severe enough! 4. Shifting under load. Make sure you change gear at the right time, a poorly timed shift can result in a jammed chain due to the torque involved. 5. Climbing on the tops. Don't climb out of the saddle on the tops of the handlebars, it is very twitchy and you don't have as much control. 6. Eating. Avoid stuffing lots of energy food into your mouth on a climb. You will be unable to take in enough oxygen as the food is blocking it's passage. Those are just some mistakes to avoid! If you'd like to contribute captions and video info in your language, here's the link 👍 http://gcn.eu/f6 Watch more on GCN... 5 Cycling Descending Mistakes To Avoid | GCN Pro Tips

Matt Stephens gives you 5 mistakes to avoid when riding downhill. Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! http://gcn.eu/fy Let us know your mistakes to avoid when descending in the comments below 👇 A grand tour rider, former national champion and Olympian, Ex-Professional cyclist Matt Stephens certainly knows plenty about descending. Here are 5 mistakes you should avoid to have better, faster and safer descending. - Looking Down - Look upwards and forwards, at the road ahead. You need to be aware of what is coming up so that you can prepare for it. - Braking Hard - Braking correctly allows you to control the bike better, of particular importance when cornering. - Taking Hands Off The Bars - You will not be stable and you are vulnerable to any outside influences such as sudden gusts of wind, animals, etc. - Riding Too Close - Don't ride to close to riders in front, especially on technical or very fast descents. This will allow you to take action if needed. - Taking The Racing Line - Cutting corners is a big no no! It is VERY dangerous. Stick to your side of the road when riding through a blind bend. GCN Rides With Mark Beaumont - Around The World In 80 Days

An average of 240miles a day Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! http://gcn.eu/gO What do you think of the record attempt? Let us know in the comments below👇 and don't forget to leave your messages of luck for Mark in the comments too! The current record is 123 days, and Mark aims to take 43 days from the record, that is almost 35% off of the record! There is a support crew that follows Mark for the complete journey, including a mechanic and nutritionist to ensure that Mark is taken care of. Mark will usually have 3 short breaks per day where he can have a quick refuel and get back on the bike again, to continue riding 16hours per day. Yep, 16hrs! Simon logged 211km before a quick stop for lunch, probably the farthest he's done before lunch! After 320km, you can really see that the duration is setting in on Simon, I don't blame him. It's a long time in the saddle, and psychologically it's a huge thing. Chapeau Simon. Mark has to do this 79 days more... Incredible. How To Choose Your Chainrings + Cassette - GCN's Guide To Selecting Road Bike Gear Ratios

05:07
Having the right gear ratios on your bike will make a huge difference to your riding experience. Here's a quick guide to how they work. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Your gear ratios are defined by the size of your chainrings and the ratios offered by your cassette. Your tyre width also affects this to a certain extent, but by far the biggest influence us exerted by the chainrings and cassette. On a road bike you have two choices of chainset. Standard, which is commonly 53x39 and compact, commonly 50x34. Cassettes generally offer gears in the range of 11-25 or 11-28. In this video, Dan Lloyd explains how gear ratios are calculated and how you can use that knowledge to your benefit - don't forget to SHARE! These days there are wider tyres, wider rims, different styles of riding. We get to the nitty gritty of what matters so that you keep grip, stay fast and have a comfortable ride. How To Pedal | Cycling Technique

05:39
Pedalling comes naturally, for the most part. But there are things you can do to make your pedal stroke more efficient. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Professional cyclists rarely think consciously about pedalling in circles, and neither should you - your natural pedal stroke is probably the best. Where the pros have the edge is a well-developed flexibility, allowing their muscles to move freely through the full pedalling range. Regular stretching will go some way to giving you that flexibility too. Cadence drills can help maintain your efficiency even when churning up hills, and even thinking about saving energy by keeping your upper body steady will help in the long run. Road Tubeless Tyres – Are They Worth It?

06:16
Road tubeless tyres offer increased puncture resistance and allow you to run lower pressures. But are they worth it? Simon Richardson finds out. Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Tubeless tyres have been around for ages and it's safe to say that they near-dominate the MTB market. But, on the road it's a different story; they're just not very widely used and they're yet to make an impact in the pro peloton. We got hold of a set of tubeless tyres and wheels to see what they're like. From weight, to tyre pressure and ride quality, Simon Richardson put them through their paces. What did he think? How To Train With A Heart Rate Monitor

04:56
Many cyclists and athletes train using a heart rate monitor. Here's our guide to using one and getting the most from it. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN In combination with power, heart rate is one of the training metrics of choice for pro cyclists. But, many cyclists and athletes from other sports get great results by just training with a heart rate monitor. This is good news because heart rate monitors are cheaper than many power meters. And, if you already have an ANT+ device you might just need to buy a heart rate monitor strap. Comment below: do you train with a HEART RATE MONITOR or POWERMETER? Is A Compact Faster Than A Standard Chainset? GCN Vs. The Mortirolo | Giro D'Italia 2015

06:48
The Mortirolo. Lance Armstrong called it the hardest climb in Europe. That makes it the perfect for finding out which is better for climbing; a compact or a standard chainring. Comment below with your guess before you watch the video! Click right here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Bike tech has come on a lot in recent years. Climbs like the Mortirolo in the Giro, the Angliru in the Vuelta and the Hautacam in the Tour will always be tough. But, have compact gears made them both easier, and faster? It sounds counter-intuiitive – compact gears give you a lower gear, which is generally thought of as slower, so, surely, 39x25 will be faster than 34x32? Watch and find out... Buy GCN Cycling Kit!
