Arc de Triomphe

04:42
Written & recorded in Paris, August 2010. Originally released March 2011 as part of the Grant Valdes album Eight Paris Sketches. In October 2017, I remastered the collection and rereleased it under my real name, as Mortals: https://songsofgranthuling.bandcamp.com/album/mortals It's like we never met Awoke here in our bed What is your name, love? Where are you from? Where are you going? Want to come along? A long "Hello" So this is what becomes of the darkness At the dawn I've known it all along The first of many songs I can see how this could end today "Au revoir," and on my way The crack of a nightmare The tiniest frown The kiss of the sunbreak Settle down You're found Linen certainty wraps around Everything We know it already We knew it in our sleep The arc of every life is longing Longing Long The arc of every life is longing Longing End it here Curtains pulled The dawn is clear. www.GrantHuling.com

Father, within Thy Will

02:43
World War I-era hymn no. 11 Released May 6th, 2015 At an estate sale, I came upon a bundle of handwritten scores. Hymns, on inspection -- signed by a Haden Laas. I took them home and learned them. Very little can be found on the author. The basic facts: Born August 22nd, 1899 in Kent, Connecticut; died April 21st, 1918 in France, during the Siege of Seicheprey. In between, the young man sketched hymns. There is no sign that they have been performed. This month's hymn is based on Genesis 22: God's order to Abraham to kill Isaac. Father, behold! here I am Simple servant of Thy dominion Rising early to cleave the lightwood Dreading each day the mountain's steady rise Even Isaac, Father Silent, I raise an altar Isaac asking what lamb we offer Father's silent and lawful answer Steady, steady through fear and trembling It will be provided As you will it, Father In Thy will. I will not Be resigned to never You will see As I hold your number Telephone, It's you I love Telephone, I've screwed things up Telephone, It's you I love Telephone, I've screwed things up You're not surrounded Your doubt's unfounded Maybe You'll call her up You're not surrounded Your doubt's unfounded Maybe You'll call her up You're not surrounded Your doubt's unfounded Maybe I'll call her up.

Our Sea of Trouble, Calm

02:30
World War I-era hymn no. 3 Released October 1st, 2014 At an estate sale, I came upon a bundle of handwritten scores. Pray for rain in the springtime That the summer may be green Every season its purpose Every purpose won't be seen We tonight look surrounded By a tempest of dark waves In our hearts feel abandoned Listing hours from the day 'Til our sea of trouble settles, calm Look to God's horizon Follow it on As a boy in the clovers Could you peer above the fence? Still a world laid in waiting When the time had come, you went As the swells break over Man the ropes Holding to our blessed duty of hope From the sea of high waters That would overcome our cheer We will make land tomorrow Having settled every fear And give praise to the maker For He made us how we are We were pale and unsteady Now we journey wide and far Ever follows peace after the storm We are charted to our promised home Off to God's horizon Heave ho! Building a Life + Pouring Cement/Spilling Blood // Grant Valdes

06:27
The encore from the At Peace At Last CD release show at Jewelbox Theater. Two songs from the not-yet-released album Cascadia. 6/24/10. Guitar tab for "Building a Life": http://bit.ly/ZEAj5P Like on fb to keep up with the latest: https://www.facebook.com/songsofGrantHuling/ "Building a Life" Concrete line Just one road Had no choice Where to go Pregnant dreams Crashing reality Fading star Wasted night Aim too far Waste your life They've waited They've waited They've waited Since they first met They've waited They've waited They've waited Since they first met Can a man believe things will turn out all right? Or can it be he can't even build a life? We're waiting We're waiting We're waiting Like man and wife I'm waiting I'm waiting I'm waiting I'm earning it all this time. "Pouring Cement/Spilling Blood" I cried, "Bring me reality" But stop - I can't bear to see All the blood that I spilled For nothing They say, "Go with the flow" I'm still bleeding Don't they know? Half of clichés are true The rest let me speak to you You black out what I say The light's out It'll stay that way The star has left the stage I've made up my mind I've made up my mind I thought you had in kind Who made you decide? Who made you decide? Who made you decide for both our lives? Who made you decide? You've poured cement Can't you see it dry? Once it's set, then we're out of time In my truth Without you The muse just bleeds and bawls You've left me half a mind You've left me half a mind You've left me half a mind Who turned out the lights? Clichés often lie Like "I will survive" We are paralyzed We are paralyzed We are paralyzed As the concrete dries I have half a mind I have half a mind I have half a mind Oh, my failed bride Oh, my failed bride You left me just in time.

When We Are Dead // Grant Valdes

03:42
At Peace At Last by Grant Valdes. [2010] I hurt you snapping - I do snap a lot Patience is fragile, but would you guess what? The old are nearly dead And history is in their heads I'm running from someone and I am not me Searching the mall for a safe place to be I hobble to a store The ghost is gone... it slides the door You will sing more importance When you're dead Society is a vision of war My best company is a stain on the floor Mystery remains But only in computer games She's joshing me surely, the mosquito brain Distracted me - I drifted out of the lane Girls, girls love the men And teenage boys just make pretend You will sing more importance When you're dead Can you design the perfect bridge to home? I want to be fired for sex on the job Truth is subjective - 'twas her that I loved! The old are nearly dead And history is in their heads ...And they're dead. (Shot by K.E. McKai)

Tabs available here: http://bit.ly/HqrVO7 Like the Empty Mirror on FB to keep up with the latest: https://www.facebook.com/thatemptymirrorsound/ Original lyrics: Meine Lebenszeit verstreicht, Stündlich eil ich zu dem Grabe, Und was ist's, das ich vielleicht, Das ich noch zu leben habe? Denk, o Mensch, an deinen Tod! My version: Time elapses every hour What is it you have to live for? Think, oh man, of your death Defer not what is not yet Good man Speak now Lord that I am earth Thrown as dust and floating downward Show me that one day I cease That one day I might be wise If at your last friends tremble Overruled by death Raise your pure heart to the court As if it were there.

Pentecost

World War I-era hymn no. 2 Released September 1st, 2014 At an estate sale, I came upon a bundle of handwritten scores. Veni, Sancte Spiritus et emite caelitus lucis tuae radium... Fifty nights From the rise Gathered we Of the faith Mighty wind Silent flame: Light Spirit of Truth who art everywhere and fill all things Sons and daughters, see the vision, dream the dream Tongues of Fire, cleansing all impurity Veni lux sacrum et beatissima Pressing in Crowded 'round From all lands Through their tongue Understand Israel Stands Spirit of truth who art everywhere and fill all things Tongues of fire, cleansing all impurity Veni lux sacrum et beatissima Lux beatissima! When We Are Dead

At Peace At Last. [2010] Bandcamp: https://songsofgranthuling.bandcamp.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/songsofGrantHuling/ I hurt you snapping - I do snap a lot Patience is fragile, but would you guess what? The old are nearly dead And history is in their heads I'm running from someone and I am not me Searching the mall for a safe place to be I hobble to a store The ghost is gone... it slides the door You will sing more importance When you're dead Society is a vision of war My best company is a stain on the floor Mystery remains But only in computer games She's joshing me surely, the mosquito brain Distracted me - I drifted out of the lane Girls, girls love the men And teenage boys just make pretend You will sing more importance When you're dead Can you design the perfect bridge to home? I want to be fired for sex on the job Truth is subjective -- 'Twas her that I loved! The old are nearly dead And history is in their heads ...And they're dead. © Landowner Records. GrantValdes.com
