Mona Lisa - Why so Famous?

04:40
The Mona Lisa is widely considered the greatest portrait of all time. It appears in countless advertisements, has inspired poetry, sculpture, forgeries, and theft. But seriously, why? The painting is small, only 30 x 21 inches, the color is somber, the background seems desolate and eerie, and the subject isn't anyone historically significant. So, what is all the brouhaha about? Is it really all about her mystifying gaze and a quirkly smile? Well, let's take a closer look. ********************** To check out the latest curiously awesome products from Vat19.com, click here: http://www.vat19.com/dvds/showproducts.cfm?action=new&adid=youtube For the most popular items on Vat19, click here: http://www.vat19.com/dvds/showproducts.cfm?action=popular&adid=youtube

LIFTING GARAGE 4 FEET HIGHER

06:43
I raised my entire garage 4 feet to fit my new boat. I did not blow out the roof. I lifted the entire structure then set a 4 foot tall cripple wall underneath the original sill plate. Took about 10 days by myself to do the job. You have to lift about 1/2 per round, then reshim and loosen steel cables a bit by turnbuckles. The steel cables are needed to keep everything from moving around while raising the load. This is NOT for amateurs who have no experience in this line of work but can be done cheaply and with only 1 person working and another (spouse/friend) watching over you for safety reasons.

Dan Seals - I Wanna Bop With You Baby!

03:41
Dan Seals - I Wanna Bop With You Baby! For KiKi I think the Dan Seals' song speaks for itself. "Bop" sung by Dan Seals Put on your bobby sox, baby, Pack up your old blue jeans. There's a band playing down at the armory That knows what rock and roll music means. I want to ride in your fifty- five T-bird Back to those old memories I ain't after your body, baby, I just want you to dance with me. Chorus: I want to BOP with you baby, all night long I wanna bebop with ya baby 'til the break of dawn I wanna make it a night like it used to be When our hearts were young and free I want to BOP with you baby, all night long I wanna bebop with ya baby 'til the break of dawn I want to BOP with you baby, all night long I got an old photograph in my pocket We were still in our teens Lord knows I look a lot older now, But you still look the same to me. Honey you don't ever laugh like you used to And I don't want to see you blue If you ain't busy tonight and you think it's all right This is what I want to do. (Chorus) Let's twist and shout, Just like in the good old days Baby, watch out, you know I just can't stand it When you look at me that way After scoring several hits as part of the soft rock duo England Dan & John Ford Coley, Dan Seals reinvented himself as a country-pop singer and enjoyed a tremendous run of success during the latter half of the '80s. Born in McCamey, TX, in 1948, his brother was Jim Seals, later of another successful soft rock duo, Seals & Crofts. Both brothers played with their parents in the Seals Family Band, with Dan learning string bass; however, after their parents divorced, Dan spent several years moving around with his mother. They eventually settled in Dallas in 1958, and Seals spent his teen years playing in garage bands, where he first met John Ford Coley. They worked together in a band called the Shimmerers, which recorded some demos in 1965 and became the Southwest F.O.B. two years later, scoring a chart single with "The Smell of Incense." Seals and Coley left to form a duo in 1969 and kicked around for a while, landing an early-'70s deal with A&M that went sour. They finally hit big in the late '70s, with soft rock touchstones "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and "Nights Are Forever Without You" ranking as their best-known singles. Seals went solo in 1980, signing with Atlantic and keeping the name England Dan for his debut album, Stones. In 1981, he underwent a grueling battle with the IRS that cost him nearly everything he owned. His follow-up album, Harbinger, stiffed, and he turned his attention to country music, adapting his style to fit the demands of country radio while still keeping his signature soft sound. Signed to Liberty/Capitol, he scored a pair of Top Ten hits on the country charts in 1984 with "(You Bring Out) The Wild Side of Me" and "God Must Be a Cowboy." "My Old Yellow Car" and "My Baby's Got Good Timing" had similar success in 1985, and his next single, a duet with Marie Osmond called "Meet Me in Montana," went all the way to number one. It also kicked off a spectacular run of nine straight chart-toppers: 1986 brought "Bop" and "Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)"; 1987 saw "I Will Be There," "Three Time Loser," and "You Still Move Me"; 1988 featured "Addicted" and "One Friend"; and 1989 gave him one more in "Big Wheels in the Moonlight." Not only that, he managed two more number ones in 1990, thanks to "Good Times" and "Love on Arrival." However, the arrival of Garth Brooks abruptly changed the country landscape, and Seals found his style out of favor. He moved to Warner Brothers in 1991, without much success, and despite releasing a few recordings on smaller labels in the latter half of the '90s, he was effectively a touring artist for the remainder of the decade. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide Tags: Bop Dan Seals dance dancing children boys girls joy happiness fun music India Mexico Japan China Spain Bokcani Granako

Mr Fingers - Can You Feel It

05:31
Born on Chicago's south side in 1960, Heard began buying records from an early age, and was influenced by his parents' jazz and gospel collection. Though he practiced on guitar and bass as a youth, he joined a friend's band playing drums after bluffing his way through an audition at the age of 17. Heard began practicing with fervor and became quite good, though he took a civil-service job as well to pay the bills. While playing with a variety of local bands during the late '70s and early '80s (including one with future house star Adonis on bass), Heard was introduced to many different types of synthesizers, and he gradually became more interested in playing keyboards than drums. Heard finally opted out of the band setup in 1984, bought a synthesizer/drum machine combo and began producing music. After a few days with the gear, he had recorded three tracks later recognized as serious pinnacles of Chicago house, among them "Mystery of Love," "Washing Machine" and "Can You Feel It." His lack of connections in the club scene made it difficult to get the tracks listened to, though Heard finally debuted on wax with a 1985 single for DJ International named "Donnie." Instead of being credited to Larry Heard however, the single appeared as the It, and was co-written by street poet Harry Dennis. Later, on one of his infrequent trips into the club/party scene, Heard met up with Robert Owens. Owens was then working as a DJ though he was (more importantly) an incredibly talented gospel-styled vocalist. Heard and Owens decided to form Fingers Inc., with the addition of Ron Wilson. The nascent Chicago house scene was just about to explode with recording activity, and Heard released nearly a dozen singles during 1986-87, for both Trax and DJ International. Fingers Inc. contributed Chicago classics like "Mystery of Love," "You're Mine," "Distant Planet" and "Bring Down the Walls" while Mr. Fingers dropped quite possibly the most sublime house single ever released, "Can You Feel It." (Though by no means a hard and fast rule, Fingers Inc. releases were usually vocal tracks, while Heard used the tag Mr. Fingers as his solo outlet.) By the end of the '80s, Heard's name was being dropped by many in the new wave of British producers influenced by American house music. He continued recording in earnest, and released one of the first house full-lengths with the 1988 Fingers Inc. LP Another Side for Jack Trax Records. The following year, Jack Trax released Heard's original 1984 instrumental demos as the Mr. Fingers album Amnesia, even though he had never given consent to the album's issue. Despite its barely legal status, the LP showcased the first flowering of Heard's genius with several impeccable tracks. His large production role on the 1989 debut album by Lil' Louis (of "French Kiss" fame) was noticed by the major labels and by the beginning of the 1990s, Heard was being offered contracts by several labels. He recorded additional material with Harry Dennis, though Dennis' continuing drug problems gave Heard a desire to strike out on his own. After finally signing to MCA as a solo act in 1991, Heard issued his first major-label album one year later. Mr. Fingers' Introduction charted an intriguing balance between floor-filling garage house and several tracks of polished jazz-fusion; Heard's undying influence among DJs and producers alike made the album quite an international success. Though it graced the American dance charts as well, MCA attempted to interfere with the production of its follow-up Back to Love, and later refused to release the album at all. It finally appeared in 1995 on Black Market Records, the label formed by Heard's friend and former manager Ren Galston. By the time Back to Love was released however, Heard had already recorded and released another album, his first as simply Larry Heard. The album Sceneries Not Songs, Vol. 1 (and its follow-up) both expanded on Heard's commitment to inner space rather than the dancefloor. He returned to a style more tied to traditional house with 1996's Alien and the following year's Dance 2000. In late 1997, Heard suddenly declared that he had quit recording to take a computer-programming job in Memphis. Despite his seeming retirement from music, two more albums of new tracks filtered out in 1998. Yet another, Genesis, followed in 1999. For the 2001 album Love's Arrival, Heard signed to the respected house label Trackmode, and its follow-up, 2003's Where Life Begins, also appeared on the label. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

THE WHAT FOUR-"I'M GONNA DESTROY THAT BOY" (1966)

02:09
Killer fashion! The What four were championed by Columbia producer Teo Macero (Miles Davis' fusion albums). They played their own instruments, although they felt a little wobbly about it. But this single needs no apologies. Riffing off of the spy themes of the times, they divulge their undercover misson to slay their prey with their outergear and, um, special accessories. The fashion revolution of Swinging London swayed young women into a jet age where music, style, the Pill, and new outlooks expanded their options. This literal 'revolt into style' opened many horizons. Taking up from Mary Quant's Mod mutiny, designer Barbara Hulanicki unleashed the Biba's boutique. ( It was her sister's nickname.) Her Art Deco and Art Nouveau upgrades, dark lush colors, and affordable styles made solely for the new youth were another level and a sensation. She also pioneered the boutique as an environment, with rock'n'soul blasting in a dark maze of themed rooms. Her progressive/traditionalist designs are the hinge between Rudi Gernreich's space age futurism and the nouveau and world-culture backlash styles of the counterculture. From 1964 to its end in 1975, Biba's was THE go-to place for outrageous style. ( The current revival is in name only, and Hulanicki disowns it.) The fashion uprising liberated young women on some levels, but there was the danger of it being just shallow consumerism. As Empowerment became the mantra of the decade, they would begin to challenge distinctions between expression and exploitation. This is a crucial pivot toword Feminism. The What Four, in taking up the instruments that propelled the generation, join their Beat and Garage sisters in redressing the future.
