Girls Project

This video depicts images and realities for adolescent girls growing up in todays society. It is critical to examine how the "ideology" of women affect the self-esteem of young girls. "Women's self-perceptions are often distorted, reflecting cultural values about women rather than realistic appraisals. Regardless of the content of these images, they tend to illustrate prevailing norms." (Kessler, McNair, Schniedewind, 2003) Additionally, the discussion of title IX brings the existing opportunity gap in to the forefront, highlighting the complexity of social change.

Thinspiration; Cmns 130 Creative Commentary

04:00
Thinspiration; Cmns 130 Creative Commentary mja14 On average, a person sees 400-600 advertisements per day, we are constantly bombarded with images of beauty, body and perfection. In fact, one in eleven of these advertisments has a direct message about beauty, and thats not even counting the indirect ones. Girls are dying to be thin We need change The average model is 511 and weighs 117lbs. The average women is 54 and weighs 140lbs. To considered healthy, one would require to have a BMI of roughly 18.5, whereas celebrities like Victoria beckam (15.3) or Angelina Jolie, who both have a BMI of 15.3, this is drastically underweight. Now I know what your thinking, why should we condemn these celebrities for looking the way they do. Well, Advertisers emphasize the importance of physical attractiveness to sell the product. They use these types of celebrities to sell their product which can provide a distorted image of realistic beauty to both the young and older audience. Its true that advertisers feed off our insecurities and it is proven that the women who are insecure about their bodies are much more likely to buy beauty products, new clothes and diet aids. We are taught that being thin is astetically beautiful. And lets be honest, images of women in the media are more often than not airbrushed, digitaly reconfigured and enhanced. Here are some examples. 80% of women are unhappy with their appearance, and are taught from an early age that their self-worth is largely dependant on how they look. But is this fair? Is this realistic? Soyou have heard this song and dance before, and your sick, your tired of hearing the media is unrealistic and superficial. Well, so am I. WE need real standards of beauty, and we need positive advertising Change is coming Dove is just one of the companies who have begun a campaign on real beauty, and has opened the eyes of many young girls of just how real beauty is in the media. But it should not stop there. We need to recognize celebrities who stand up, and are not ashamed of being healthy, and dont have to eat nothing to feel good about themselves. Celebrities like Beyonce or Tyra Banks both with a BMI of 23. Change is now SO what can we do? Where do we go from here? It will take a long time for both men and women to stop internalizing these stereotypes and to stop judging themselves based on unattainable standards. Size 10 is not plus, and Size 0 is not cool if you have to starve yourself to get there. University has taught me that your happiness does not depend solely on how you look, but who you are, and classes like cmns 130 have taught me to question what I see in the media and to be a better informed person. I hope that I have enlightened some of you today, and thankyou for listening.

About A Girl 1x01: Workin' Hard For The Money.

00:30
*I OWN NOTHING. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED* -from Jamie's POV- So busting tables at the Hard Rock Cafe might not be every girl's dream job, but as long as i'm with my sister, I guess it's okay. And tonight was special, the owner got an amazing band for the main gig. WHO?! you're probably dying to know! They call themselves the Jonas Brothers. ----------------------------------------------------- //in the break room// Jamie: [messing with her hair] Up or down? Natalie: Down, defiantly. Jamie: [shrugs and lets her hair fall freely over her shoulders] What are you gonna wear for the big concert? Natalie: [points to her uniform] This. Jamie: [laughs] No, seriously. Natalie: I still have a job to do, Jamie. I would like to pay for my scholarship to Saddleback before we're out of high school. Jamie: [walks around the table; let's her words droan out] Natalie!!! It's ONE night! I think you'll live! And come on, you're meeting your DREAM band! Natalie: Mr. Chase never said we were meeting them, we only get to watch them preform. Jamie: Well..technially he never said we weren't meeting them either.. Natalie: [rolls her eyes] Jamie, you always find a way to twist people's words. Jamie: [smiles] Yeah, I know. It's one of my best qualities. Natalie: [mumbles something under her breath] Jamie: [looks up] What? Natalie: Nothing. Jamie: [shrugs; takes a sip of water] Mr. Chase: [walks in] Girls, the Jonas Brothers have arrived and I need you to assist them until the show begins. Jamie: [spits the water in her mouth all over the floor; leaving her jaw hanging. Turns to face Mr. Chase with a big stupid grin] Which room? Mr. Chase: Room 142- Jamie: [runs out of the room squealing] Natalie: [shakes her head] And to think we're related.. Mr. Chase: I'm sure she's just excited..[hands her the room key] Here, I think you'll need this. Natalie: Yeah, that idiot's probably banging on the door right now asking them to open up. If you see a security guard taking her away, let me know, okay? Mr. Chase: [laughs] Of course, Miss. Nelson. --------------------------------- -from natalie's POV- It took me three minutes to find the room and one second to find Jamie sitting on the ground by the door. Jamie: [looks up] Hey. Natalie: [rolls her eyes] Couldn't get in? Jamie: No..they thought I was a crazed fan or something..pshh! Natalie: [sarcastic] NO! Really?! I wonder why!! Jamie: [glares at her] Whatever! Not like you could get it! Natalie: Oh really? [unlocks the door; walks in; turns around and smirks] Jamie: [in wonder] Where'd you get a key from?! Natalie: If you would've waited a few more seconds before spitting your water all over the carpet and running away screaming, then you would've gotten the key. Jamie: So that's what that shiny thing sticking out of Chase's pocket was!! I looked up to see the most beautiful human beings on the face of the earth. Especially the one in the middle, Joe Jonas. My heart stopped as all three of them roared laughing. Joe: [laughing; points to Jamie] I'm going to guess this is the one that was in the hallway begging to come in? Jamie: [blushes] Natalie: Yeah, because I know it wasn't me. [smiles] Joe: [smiles] Well what's your name? Natalie: Natalie Nelson. And you've already..kinda met my sister, Jamie Nelson. Nick: [smiles at Jamie] Jamie: [blushes and smiles back; hiding her face] Joe: Well, it's nice to know there's...some-what normal kids here. Jamie: Oh, we're not kids. We're teenagers. Joe: Oh..right. Okay. Natalie: [whispers to Joe] Yeah, we're not too sure about her.. Joe: [laughs] It's okay. Nick: [sits down] Jamie: [looks over to the spot by Nick; hesitates but wants to sit down SO badly] Nick: [sees her looking] You want to sit here? Jamie: Oh so badly. Nick: [laughs and waves her over] Jamie: [smiles and sits by him] Nick: So how old are you? Jamie: Sixteen. Nick: Oh, cool! Me too! Jamie: I know. [smiles] Nick: Oh right..Jonas Brothers fan? Jamie: The biggest. And yeah, I know you must hear that alot, but they're all liars. Nick: [laughs] Okay..what's the name of the song I wrote on the set of Camp Rock? Jamie: [laughs] Oh please! If you're going to quiz me, you have to at least give me a good question! Nick: Well you have to answer my questions before I can ask anymore. Jamie: A Little Bit Longer. Nick: [smiles] Very good. *they continue talking..yada, yada, yada* //with joe and natalie// Joe: So, you're eighteen? Natalie: Yeah, on my last year in high school. I'm working here to try to get enough money for a scholarship to Saddleback. Joe: You want to go to Saddleback? Natalie: Yeah, it's always been my dream. But with only this job, I don't know how i'm going to afford it. Joe: Well..we could help you out. end of story:)

Ray Charles - Hit The Road Jack

02:20
Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and '60s work, however, can't obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-'60s, though he recorded often and performed until the year before his death. Blind since the age of six (from glaucoma), Charles studied composition and learned many instruments at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind. His parents had died by his early teens, and he worked as a musician in Florida for a while before using his savings to move to Seattle in 1947. By the late '40s, he was recording in a smooth pop/R&B style derivative of Nat "King" Cole and Charles Brown. He got his first Top Ten R&B hit with "Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand" in 1951. Charles' first recordings came in for their fair share of criticism, as they were much milder and less original than the classics that would follow, although they're actually fairly enjoyable, showing strong hints of the skills that were to flower in a few years. In the early '50s, Charles' sound started to toughen as he toured with Lowell Fulson, went to New Orleans to work with Guitar Slim (playing piano on and arranging Slim's huge R&B hit, "The Things That I Used to Do"), and got a band together for R&B star Ruth Brown. It was at Atlantic Records that Ray Charles truly found his voice, consolidating the gains of recent years and then some with "I Got a Woman," a number-two R&B hit in 1955. This is the song most frequently singled out as his pivotal performance, on which Charles first truly let go with his unmistakable gospel-ish moan, backed by a tight, bouncy horn-driven arrangement. Throughout the '50s, Charles ran off a series of R&B hits that, although they weren't called "soul" at the time, did a lot to pave the way for soul by presenting a form of R&B that was sophisticated without sacrificing any emotional grit. "This Little Girl of Mine," "Drown in My Own Tears," "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "Lonely Avenue," and "The Right Time" were all big hits. But Charles didn't really capture the pop audience until "What'd I Say," which caught the fervor of the church with its pleading vocals, as well as the spirit of rock & roll with its classic electric piano line. It was his first Top Ten pop hit, and one of his final Atlantic singles, as he left the label at the end of the '50s for ABC. One of the chief attractions of the ABC deal for Charles was a much greater degree of artistic control of his recordings. He put it to good use on early-'60s hits like "Unchain My Heart" and "Hit the Road Jack," which solidified his pop stardom with only a modicum of polish attached to the R&B he had perfected at Atlantic. In 1962, he surprised the pop world by turning his attention to country & western music, topping the charts with the "I Can't Stop Loving You" single, and making a hugely popular album (in an era in which R&B/soul LPs rarely scored high on the charts) with Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. Perhaps it shouldn't have been so surprising; Charles had always been eclectic, recording quite a bit of straight jazz at Atlantic, with noted jazz musicians like David "Fathead" Newman and Milt Jackson. Charles remained extremely popular through the mid-'60s, scoring big hits like "Busted," "You Are My Sunshine," "Take These Chains From My Heart," and "Crying Time," although his momentum was slowed by a 1965 bust for heroin. This led to a year-long absence from performing, but he picked up where he left off with "Let's Go Get Stoned" in 1966. Yet by this time Charles was focusing increasingly less on rock and soul, in favor of pop tunes. One approaches sweeping criticism of Charles with hesitation; he was an American institution, after all, and his vocal powers barely diminished over his half-century career. The fact remains, though, that his work after the late '60s on record was very disappointing. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads among multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. Yeah I know sometimes things may not always make sense to you right now But hey, what daddy always tell you? Straighten up little soldier Stiffen up that other limb What you crying about? You got me Hailie I know you miss your mom and I know you miss your dad Well I'm gone but I'm trying to give you the life that I never had I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you want to cry Cuz you're scared, I ain't there? Daddy's with you in your prayers No more crying, wipe them tears Daddy's here, no more nightmares We gon' pull together through it, we gon' do it Laney uncles crazy, aint he? Yeah but he loves you girl and you better know it We're all we got in this world When it spins, when it swirls When it whirls, when it twirls Two little beautiful girls Lookin' puzzled, in a daze I know it's confusing you Daddy's always on the move, mamma's always on the news I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me All the things growing up his daddy that he had to see Daddy don't want you to see but you see just as much as he did We did not plan it to be this way, your mother and me But things have gotten so bad between us I don't see us ever being together ever again Like we used to be when we was teenagers But then of course everything always happens for a reason I guess it was never meant to be But it's just something we have no control over and that's what destiny is But no more worries, rest your head and go to sleep Maybe one day we'll wake up and this will all just be a dream [Chorus] Now hush little baby, don't you cry Everything's gonna be alright Stiffen that ?limb up? little lady, i told ya Daddy's here to hold ya through the night I know mommy's not here right now and we don't know why We feel how we feel inside It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby But i promise momma's gon' be alright It's funny I remember back one year when daddy had no money Mommy wrapped the Christmas presents up And stuck 'em under the tree and said some of 'em were from me Cuz daddy couldn't buy 'em I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying Cuz daddy felt like a bum, see daddy had a job But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and mom And at the time every house that we lived in Either kept getting broke into and robbed Or shot up on the block and your mom was saving money for you in a jar Tryna start a piggy bank for you so you could go to college Almost had a thousand dollars till someone broke in and stole it And I know it hurt so bad it broke your momma's heart And it seemed like everything was just startin' to fall apart Mom and dad was arguin' a lot so momma moved back On the Chalmers in the flat one bedroom apartment And dad moved back to the other side of 8 Mile on Novara And that's when daddy went to California with his CD and met Dr. Dre And flew you and momma out to see me But daddy had to work, you and momma had to leave me Then you started seeing daddy on the T.V. and momma didn't like it And you and Laney were to young to understand it Papa was a rollin' stone, momma developed a habit And it all happened too fast for either one of us to grab it I'm just sorry you were there and had to witness it first hand Cuz all I ever wanted to do was just make you proud Now I'm sittin in this empty house, just reminiscing Lookin' at your baby pictures, it just trips me out To see how much you both have grown, it's almost like you're sisters now Wow, guess you pretty much are and daddy's still here Laney I'm talkin' to you too, daddy's still here I like the sound of that, yeah It's got a ring to it don't it? Shh, momma's only gone for the moment [Chorus] And if you ask me too Daddy's gonna buy you a mockingbird I'mma give you the world I'mma buy a diamond ring for you I'mma sing for you I'll do anything for you to see you smile And if that mockingbird don't sing and that ring don't shine I'mma break that birdies neck I'd go back to the jewler who sold it to ya And make him eat every carat don't fuck with dad (haha)

Ray Charles - What'd I Say

04:30
