The Only Way to Survive a Fall from an Extreme Height

08:04
Can you survive falling out of a plane? Such miracles happen extremely rarely. But you can increase your chances to survive even in the situation when it seems that nothing can save you. What is the maximum height a person can plummet from and survive? Even the fall from the first floor can turn out bad, one from 33,000 feet. However, Yugoslavian flight attendant Vesna Vulovic managed to survive a fall from such height after her plane blew up in the air as a result of a terrorist attack. She got severe injuries but a bit later returned to the aviation working as a flight attendant again as if nothing had happened. The secret here was that due to her traumas she lost the memories of the catastrophe and didn't suffer from PTSD or nightmares. TIMESTAMPS If you're falling from the window 1:00 If you're falling from the plane 3:25 A free fall without any plane fragments at hand 6:07 SUMMARY It will take you about 3-6 minutes to fall from the height of 33,000 feet, and the fall itself will have the speed of 120 miles per hour. Unfortunately, the chances to survive are incredibly slim, but hey you have nothing else to do. You can either: watch the clouds go whizzing by, picture just how big an impact crater you’re about to make, or try to save your life. It's obvious that to survive; you have to get lucky first of all. But in general, after watching this video your chances to survive after falling from a height have significantly increased. So, share it with your friends you care about. Shismaref, the arctic town falling into the sea through climate change , Alaska

02:06
Shismaref, the arctic town falling into the sea through climate change ,alaska ccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19 km2), of which, 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) of it is land and 4.5 square miles (12 km2) of it (61.62%) is water. Shishmaref was named in 1821 by explorer Lt. Otto von Kotzebue, of the Imperial Russian Navy, after Capt. Lt. Gleb Shishmaryov who accompanied him on his exploration. Sarichef Island (on which Shishmaref is located) is part of a dynamic, 100 km-long barrier island chain that records human and environmental history spanning the past 2000 years; the oldest subaerial evidence for the formation of this system is about 1700 years before present, according to carbon 14 dating (see References, below). Erosion at Shishmaref is unique along the islands because of its fetch exposure and high tidal prism, relatively intense infrastructure development during the 20th century, and multiple shoreline defense structures built beginning in the 1970s. Global warming Ambox current red.svg This section needs to be updated. Please update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information. (August 2016) The effect of global climate change upon Shishmaref is sometimes seen as the most dramatic in the world.[8] Rising temperatures have resulted in a reduction in the sea ice which serves to buffer Shishmaref from storm surges. At the same time, the permafrost that the village is built on has also begun to melt, making the shore even more vulnerable to erosion. In recent years the shore has been receding at an average rate of up to 10 feet (3.3 m) per year.[9] Although a series of barricades has been put up to protect the village, the shore has continued to erode at an alarming rate. The town's homes, water system and infrastructure are being undermined.[10][11][12][13][14] Currently, Shishmaref has obtained funds to construct seawalls that protect some of the shoreline. The village had plans to relocate several miles to the south, on the mainland to the Tin Creek site. However, Tin Creek proved unsuitable for long term settlement due to melting permafrost in the area. The Shishmaref Erosion and Relocation Coalition, made up of the city, the IRA Council and other organizations, is seeking federal, state and private funding for a move elsewhere. The cost of moving Shishmaref is estimated at $180 million, nearly $320,000 per resident. The village was told by the Obama administration that no federal money was available, therefore tensions arose in 2013 when John Kerry announced Vietnam would receive $17 million to deal with climate change. Erosion rates along the island front exceed (and are not comparable with) those along adjacent sectors. Erosion is occurring along the entire island chain, but it is exacerbated at Sarichef Island in part because of the hydrographic impacts of hard armoring of a sandy shoreface and permafrost degradation that is accelerated by infrastructure. Residents are experiencing the effects of coastal retreat on residential and commercial properties. On August 16, 2016, the village voted to move the town to the mainland.[15] Culture Shishmaref is a traditional Inupiaq Eskimo village. Residents rely heavily on a subsistence lifestyle, hunting and gathering much of their food. Primary food sources include sea mammals such as oogruk (bearded seal), other seals and walrus, fish, birds (such as ptarmigan), caribou and moose. The village is well known in the region for its high-quality seal oil and fermented meat.[citation needed] It is known for its Native art. Local carvings of whalebone and walrus ivory are sought after by galleries in Alaska and the Lower 48. Shishmaref was home to one of Alaska's most-beloved dog mushers. Herbie Nayokpuk, known as the "Shishmaref Cannonball", died in December 2006. He finished the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race numerous times, including a second-place finish. It is sometimes referred to as "the friendliest village in Alaska."[16] Researchers, journalists and the occasional tourist visit Shishmaref, and the city has acquired a reputation for being a gracious host. If You See Square Waves In The Ocean, Get Out Of The Water Immediately

03:40
If You See Square Waves In The Ocean, Get Out Of The Water Immediately We’re used to the relaxing sounds of gentle waves hitting the shoreline, but did you know that there are different types of waves? I’m not talking about big waves like tsunamis, but a natural phenomenon known as square waves. These waves are called a “cross sea,” which forms when waves collide from different angles and form squares in the ocean. You might have never heard of or even seen waves like this, but they do exist, and they’re very dangerous. The pictures of square waves are enchanting. It almost feels these waves are inspired from a science fiction tale like the Matrix, in which the pieces of the world are about to fall apart. In areas where “cross seas” are common, residents would beg to differ. Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France, experiencing square waves. When waves from one weather system continue to move in the same direction, even though there has been a shift in wind, it causes waves made by the new wind to run at an angle, creating a dangerous pattern. It looks harmless on the surface, but underwater, there are powerful currents that can capsize and throw large ships up in the air. The reason why is because boats are made to hit currents head on, but if waves are coming from all different angles, there’s no escape. Rare image of square waves. Cross seas also create extremely dangerous riptides, so make sure you’re not anywhere close to the water when this natural phenomenon occurs. Luckily, square waves don’t happen often, but it’s important to know what they mean and how to stay safe. A cross sea covering as far as the eye can see. 1. The convergence of the Baltic and North Seas This ocean phenomenon is believed to even be mentioned in the Quran. In Denmark, there’s a clear line that separates the Baltic and North Seas because these waters never mix together. The reason is because of the difference in densities in the two seas. Think of it like this: Why doesn’t oil and water mix? 2. Red Tide The Red Tide is also called “Algal Blooming.” Not all red tides are harmful to humans and marine life, but it’s best to stay out of these waters just in case. 3. Bioluminescent shores This mesmerizing display of bioluminescence was found in Tathra, New South Wales. These gorgeous nighttime beaches that can be found on every adventurer’s bucket list is caused by bioluminescent plankton in warm coastal waters. When these plankton are under stress, they make the water glow as a defence mechanism, attracting predators to eat the predator trying to eat them. Some people believe underwater circles were created by aliens. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding underwater crop circles after they were found near the waters of a Japanese island. Some think these intricate underwater sand designs were created by an extraterrestrial being, while others think this is the work of puffer fish. It’s more widely believed that these fish draw these circles and decorate them with shells to attract a mate. Did you know square waves exist? Renzo Piano Interview: On the Shoulders of Giants

45:19
In-depth biographical interview with the Pritzker prizewinning Italian architect Renzo Piano – known for celebrated buildings such as The Shard and Centre Georges Pompidou – who explains why it’s okay “to steal” as long as you give something back. “What keeps people alive is not what you’ve done, what you’ve been, but what you will be and what you will do.” Piano feels that one must avoid falling into the trap of nostalgia by thinking too much about one’s roots and past. Born in Genoa, he feels that the sea and its connotations are part of what shaped him: “The sea is like a mysterious place to go one day, so you grow up with this idea to run away one day, and to discover the rest of the world.” Moreover, compares the sea to a soup, “a consommé of different cultures.” “It’s very funny, because as an architect, at a certain age, when you travel you feel at home everywhere.” Piano, who considers himself to be a European rather than an Italian, feels that that travelling is extremely important, because it allows you to get away from what you’re doing, permitting you to see it more clearly when you return. As an architect, you can’t simply be “a tourist”, but you need to understand and listen – not only to people, but also to places, as places too have a story to tell. In continuation of this, he emphasizes that “young people should travel to understand how lucky they are to be born in a place where you live on the shoulders of giants. You live on the freedom that was build up in centuries.” If you don’t go away, if you don’t travel, you don’t understand how lucky you are. Moreover, it is important that you appreciate that diversity is a value, not a problem, and what makes us grow, learn – and steal: “Stealing, I know, is not nice, but if the condition is that you give back, it’s not that bad.” When young people come to work at Piano’s offices, what they’re told is to “take, take away – don’t wait for us to give you, take. But if possible, give back one day.” “Architects don’t change history, but they witness the change of history.” Architects give a shape to the change, which is why public buildings are so important and apart from being good craftsmen, architects need to master the social aspect: “You are not just a builder, you are also a civic person, so you make a shelter for human beings and human communities. And this becomes even more interesting, because then you make buildings that are for people to stay together and to share values, which is the beginning of maybe making a better world.” In continuation of this, though the war didn’t affect him directly, Piano (b. 1937) grew up with a pacifistic attitude, which has stayed with him ever since: “Making a great building is a civic gesture – a gesture of peace.” Renzo Piano (b. 1937) is a lauded Italian architect. His most known buildings include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Shard in London, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, Potsdamer Platz in Berlin and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In 1998, Piano won the highly prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, the jury comparing him to Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, praising him for “his intellectual curiosity and problem-solving techniques as broad and far-ranging as those earlier masters of his native land,” and crediting him with “redefining modern and postmodern architecture.” In 2006, Piano was selected by TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. How This Cat Survived A 32-Story Fall

03:16
Cats are famous for landing on their feet. But they use a different technique to survive falls from much higher up. By splaying their limbs like a parachuter, cats have been known to walk away from falls as high as 32 stories up with limited injuries. ------------------------------------------------------ #Cats #TerminalVelocity Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/science Science Insider on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BusinessInsiderScience/ Science Insider on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/science_insider/ Business Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/businessinsider Tech Insider on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider ------------------------------------------------------ How This Cat Survived A 32-Story Fall Following is a transcript of the video: 32 stories above the streets of New York City, a cat fell from a window and lived. After vets treated the cat's chipped tooth and collapsed lungs, the feline was sent home two days later. Cats fall a lot, and they've gotten really good at it. Drop a cat upside down, for example, and it will almost always land on its feet. That's because cats are extremely flexible. They can twist their bodies mid-air as they fall. But landing feet first isn't always the best strategy. Like if you're falling from 32 stories up. To figure out how cats manage that perfect landing every time, a series of studies looked at over a 100 cats' falls from two to 32 stories up. Comes as no surprise that cats who fell from the second floor had fewer injuries than cats who fell from the sixth floor. But here is the fascinating part. Above the seventh story, the extent of the injuries largely stayed the same, no matter how high the cats fell. So, how is that possible? Well, it all comes down to acrobatics or lack thereof. Cats that fell from two to seven stories up mostly landed feet first. Above that, however, cats used a different technique. Instead of positioning their legs straight down as they fell, they splayed out like a parachuter. And landed belly-first instead. But this method isn't 100% foolproof. Chest trauma, like a collapsed lung, or broken rib is more common with this landing method. But the risk of breaking a leg is much less. So, how do cats somehow subconsciously know how to land? It has to do with a physics phenomenon called terminal velocity. At first, the cat plummets faster and faster under gravity until she's fallen the equivalent of five stories. At that point, she hits constant terminal velocity at 100 kilometers per hour. She's now in free fall where air friction counteracts her acceleration under gravity. At this point, she's no longer accelerating and, more importantly, doesn't feel the pull from gravity. So, here's what researchers think is happening. From two to seven stories up, cats don't have enough time to reach terminal velocity and prep for landing feet first. But once they hit terminal velocity, their instinct changes and they parachute their limbs. All that said, don't throw your cat out of a window. I can't believe I have to say this. Not only is it still very dangerous, it's not very polite. Don't throw your cat out the window just to see all that go down. Just watch this video again. Just hit the little replay button.

Why are there dozens of 'ghost cities' in China?

Fancy villas, high-rise apartment blocks, lakes, parks and sprawling road networks: ghost cities in China have it all — except people. To some, the empty sprawls are a sign of a Chinese debt crisis, but to others it shows China's thinking one step ahead. BREAKING INTO ABANDONED SAFE!!

15:36
While Stephen went down to the pond to check on the activity of the pond monster, he noticed that Carters safe had fallen underwater again and it was sitting at the bottom of the pond, all abandoned. The reason there was a safe in pond was because, at first, Lizzy Sharer accidentally drove the safe into the pond. But today, the safe fell back in because the pond monster must have knocked it over. So Stephen yanked the safe out of the water and with the help of his brother, Steven and Carter worked together to crack open the safe to see what was inside. Facts About Coral You WON'T BELIEVE

15:43
Is coral a plant, an animal, or a rock? Amazingly, coral is all 3! Here are 10 fascinating Facts About Coral. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR Don't forget to CHECK OUT our latest upload: https://goo.gl/LUB8Xw Sand Is Made From Pooped Coral The Purple Streak Parrotfish and this guy just so happens to feed off coral. The Parrotfish nibbling on delicious algae to encompass Ben and Jerry's own Phish Food of the sea. Afterwards, the fuel is excreted into a beautiful white sand substance and this process helps create those perfect beaches adorning postcards and destination brochures. Size Matters As there are twenty five different families of corals around the world and roughly 1500 species, it comes as no surprise that coral is a superhost to a variety of sea life. While coral reefs manage to span as little as 1% of the ocean, they provide a cozy home to 25% known marine species. Plus, offering homes to more than 4,000 different species of fish, it is quite fascinating to think that there are more of these swimmers inhabiting a two-acre span of reef than there are species of birds in the entirety of North America! Minerals And Plants And Animals, Oh My! Growing in the shallows of clear tropical waters where sunlight can easily hit the soft seabed floor, corals don’t stray far from land. Infact, out of the three main. A commonality of all three reefs are the two type of coral that encompass each: hard and soft. Stony corals build the reef’s solid frame through the production of limestone, and soft corals provide a safe habitat for its marine life friends. When Coral Met Algae Coral relies on photosynthetic algae to receive 90% of its food and energy through photosynthesis; in turn, coral tissues attract algae and provide the compounds necessary for photosynthesis. In a sense, algae helps coral survive and coral gives its friend a cozy habitat to live in. Age Is Nothing But A Really Long Number Having existed for over 400,000 years, the Mediterranean sea was home to the largest ever number of coral colonies but this was then, now, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is considered the largest living thing on earth and can be seen from space! Geologists suggest that the ancestors of modern reef ecosystems are at least 240 million years old. The fossil record for more than 400 million years, corals are considered ancient animals of the sea, evolving into contemporary reef-building structures over the past 25 million years. Familial Ties And you thought you didn’t like your family. Imagine being related to the stinging jelly or stinging polyp-- aka the sea anemone. This is where coral polyps get their ability to sting out of defense and capture food through their ring of floating tentacles. It’s like they always say: A family that preys together stays together. Barrier actually means barrier Reefs protect the coastline against menacing waves, stormfronts, floods and help lessen loss of life in the wake of natural catastrophe, as well as lessen property damage and land erosion. One of the greatest known barriers is the Great Barrier Reef located in Australia off the coast of Queensland. This ecosystem spans 2,300 kilometers and consists of thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands all encompassing over 600 types of the hard and soft corals aforementioned. New-Age Medicines The next time you need to go to the pharmacy, look no further than your local barrier reef. According to the National Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coral is the quintessential medicinal cabinet of the sea. Living an immobile life thus involves the evolution of chemical defense mechanisms that keep it safe from harm. Within these microscopic polyps, scientist continue to discover new medical treatments, commercial products and even cosmetics produced from the diverse chemical components found in corals. Ask Not What You Can Do For Coral, But What Coral Can Do For You According to a study by Smithsonian Ocean, approximately 30 million depend on the reefs for their livelihood. The value of coral ecosystems is estimated at USD $29.8 billion per year based on food, jobs, and protection of our coastlines. All in all, coral reefs are a very unique structure of life and productivity: They rival old growth forests in terms of longevity regarding their ecological systems. Coral Bleaching Algae can live without coral but coral cannot live without algae. Major factors causing coral bleaching are from global warming and pollution. When trash floats on the surface it affects water temperature and light which affects any chance of photosynthesis occurring below the surface. When it goes, so does the beautiful color associated with coral. Currently, 25% of our reefs are damaged beyond repair. As of now, 19% of the world's reefs have been lost. 15% will be seriously threatened in the next 10 to 20 years.

धरती के अंदर तेल और गैस के भंडारों का पता कैसे लगाया जाता है? How to find oil and gas?

10:37
Energy resources have been a very important contribution in the development of human civilization. the changing times, uses of energy also change. now we use petroleum energy, coal power, gas energy, solar energy and electricity. But do you know how the stores of gas and petroleum energy are used, which we use most. And why are they deeper than water in the ground floor? How is petroleum and gas formed and how long does it take? how to find the oil and gas under the sea and the ground? And why are they found in deep depth in the land? How you made? And how long does it take? also know which places where oil and gas are found in India? it is very expensive to find oil and gas, so it is very important for the searchers to find out where the oil and gas are present. how the oil and gas formed inside the earth or how? crude oil and natural gas is formed in millions of years by the destruction of vegetation and marine life and chemical processes inside the Earth. why oil and gas are also lower than water? oil and gas are found in Arab countries such as Iraq and Iran. because there is no water in the ground. Whereas in a country like India, due to high levels of water, oil and gas are found in deep depth. how to find oil and gas under ground or under sea water? The data that is received after this is analyzed with the help of a super computer by the geologist. Which shows how much gas and oil reserves are available on any exploration site. After this, crude oil and gas mines / wells are dug at that place. In India, the work of data analysis is sent to a lab located in Hyderabad. There it is decided that there is no oil and gas and if so how much quantity? And in the same year, the government has approved to explore the reserves of oil and gas in the Siwan district of Bihar. is called "Seismic Exploration". With the help of this technology, the beginning of finding oil and gas started after 1859. Seismic waves are left in the water to help find oil and gas in the water. rock, oil and gas and hit back with the seismometer / hydrophones in the ship. This data is collected and here the geological analyzes of this data with the help of supercomputer. After which they find out the amount of gas and oil reserves present in the amount. The process of extracting oil and gas is started at the same place. How long does it take to search for oil and gas? entire process takes about a year. You will be impressed by knowing that with the help of this technology, bats search for their prey, and by this technique, the doctor gathers information about the health of the child born in the womb. If the geologist's estimation of some place goes wrong, then the refining company may have to suffer a loss of millions of rupees. Now we will know the history of oil and gas in India. oil was extracted from Assam alone, but after that excavation of mineral oil was started in Gujarat and Bombay High. Oil and gas are found below the ground and under the water of the sea, which we talked about, today 26 such basins have been traced in India, from which there is adequate possibilities of getting oil and gas. Gujarat: In the state of Gujarat, Khambhat and Ankleshwar are important areas, whereas the oil sector is expanding at places like Navangaon, Kosamba, Sunnd river valley, Kadi, Olpad, Hardana, Dholka, Mihasana and Kallol. Oil was excavated in 1958 for the first time in the Khambhat oil field. Oil has been detected in Eliabet Island, 45 km away from Bhavnagar in Saurashtra. According to the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Gujarat has 500 million tonnes of oil reserves. Maharashtra: Bombay High area is spreading about 2,000 sq km away from the coast of Maharashtra, which is also an important oil field, from which oil is being received since 1976. Currently, mineral oil is being excavated from Godavari river valley area. It is estimated that 1250 million tonnes of oil reserves are available here. Assam valley: Assam Valley is India's most important and ancient oil field. Here the first year was discovered in 1837 by an officer in the oil. Here, about 800 oil wells have been digested in Digboi, the major oil fields of the region, in which Bappa Pang, Piatola, Haspapang etc. are very important. Apart from this, oil is also extracted in Badharpur and Patharia in the valley of Naharkitia, Hargiyan-Moran and Surma river. 10 Mysterious Ancient Roman Archaeological Finds

11:19
From treasures you can’t imagine to bejeweled human remains, here are 10 of the greatest and most mysterious archaeological finds ever made in Ancient Rome. 10 “Mini Pompeii” Metro During the 2007 construction of the Line C Metro in Rome, workers accidentally uncovered one of the most incredible archaeological finds of all time: a partially intact ancient home. Archaeologist Gilberto Pagani was absolutely blown away by the house, which was found roughly 40 feet underground, he dubbed it the “mini pompeii” due to its preservation method. The home caught on fire some 1800 years ago, causing the ceiling to collapse. The falling ceiling sealed the home, preserving everything inside, giving us a glimpse of everyday second century Roman life. Complete with incredible mosaics and marble floors, Pagani’s crew even discovered a large dog’s skeleton inside, well preserved in the rubble, and many intact structural beams. The find has actually since been used to create more accurate models of Roman homes and structures, giving us an even clearer picture of ancestral Roman life. Whats really incredible is that the home will be carefully removed for preservation and restoration, and then put back to be used as part of the metro station, it will certainly be one the most beautiful and historical metro stops in the world. 9 Ara Pacis The Ara Pacis is a monument in Rome built to commemorate the peaceful and successful reign of Augustus, the first true Emperor of the Roman Republic. Rediscovered in 1568, when the first fragments of the great monument emerged, the Ara Pacis was not restored until much later in the 1930s when Benito Mussolini ordered the project to begin. The monument was made entirely of hand carved marble and depicted the lineage of Augustus’ family alongside scenes of mythology. Inside of the construction was a sacrificial altar where blood sacrifices and burnt offerings were sent to the gods. The fragments have been kept in museum safekeeping since then with a highly controversial architectural piece done by the firm of Richard Meier taking the place of the original monument. 8 A Mosaic in England During a 2015 dig in Boxford, England, a stunning, massive mosaic was uncovered amid rubble. Depicting numerous scenes, including Hercules during his trials and Bellerophon fighting a Chimera, the obviously Roman work was thought to be a hoax due to its odd location until testing revealed it to be over one thousand years old and of certain Roman creation. Rome invaded Britain in 43 AD, so the piece was likely commissioned during that time and eventually lost. Incredibly, the work survived over ten centuries buried in Boxford, unnoticed and undisturbed, a testament to the Roman influence spread around the globe. 7 Corinth In the time before planes, controlling seaports meant having power and prosperity. These good tides also brought attention from the rest of the world, putting nations at greater risk of invasions. Corinth, a Greek city, held two seaports, making it a highly sought after landmass. It was leveled in a hostile Roman takeover in 146 BCE and rebuilt with as part of the Roman Empire. In 44 BCE, Caesar reclaimed the ports as Greek property, which has remained Corinth ever since. Over time, the port of Lechaion became weighted down and crumbled into the sea, at which point it was presumed lost forever. Recently, though, a dive team discovered the sunken remains of the land and were shocked to find that the architecture and advancements of the area were not Greek, but instead Roman. The Greeks retained the Roman work, allowing the innovations of the empire to spread as visitors came to do business with the Greeks. 6 Copper Factory In 2008, researchers discovered an entire factory’s remmanents buried beneath the dust. Dated to around the sixth century, this factory was used to smelt copper, one of Rome’s most important resources for coin making, architecture, and the historically incredible Roman plumbing system and aqueducts. Romans would melt down ores and pour the metal into specialized molds to create pipes, individual coins, and other pieces. The craftsmen of such work would toil in extremely hot environments and had to be extremely cautious in their work to prevent serious burns from the molten metal and hot tools. Many aspects of their smelting process was recovered within this excavation, giving us a little more insight in the system the Romans used which was ahead of its time . 5 Intact Military Barrack 4 Military Commander’s Home 3 Aqueduct 2 An Art Treasure Trove 1 The Bejeweled Martyr Skeletons

Built in 1929 as a large spa destination for the mineral water in the area, it was extremely advanced with cold mineral water pumped into all 450 rooms. After the discovery of new medications in the 40's and 50's the popularity of mineral water's healing properties drastically declined thus causing the hotel to struggle to find guests. The building has been closed since 1972 and has endured a lot of decay. RESTRICTIONS: Broadcast: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Digital: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Scientists have proposed a plan to build a wall around the Antarctic ice sheets in a bid to slow their collapse. As the planet heats up due to global warming, the world's ice sheets are rapidly melting and causing sea levels to rise at an alarming rate. To prevent this global catastrophe, scientists proposed constructing artificial undersea mounds to catch the ice as it flows forward, thereby allowing it to reground, according to new research published in The Cryosphere. A second idea aims to address the threat of warm water currents, which have been known to thin ice shelves. According to the research, building a long, continuous wall or sill across the front of the glacier will block warm water from seeping under the ice shelf. The study authors found that smaller structures would have a 30% success rate, and that larger walls may be even more effective. However, some scientists warn that such geoengineering is simply a band-aid for the real problem, and offers no real solution to reversing global warming. RUNDOWN SHOWS: 1. Depiction of melting ice sheets contributing to sea level rise 2. Depiction of mounds of dirt regrounding collapsing ice sheets 3. Depiction of warm water thinning glaciers 4.
