Sunday June 6, 1993: A wing of the Holbeck Hall Hotel on Britain's east coast collapses into the sea as the cliff wall beneath it gives way. It happens at the exact moment Yorkshire TV's Calendar programme goes on the air, with the presenter, the great Richard Whiteley, positioned in front of the building. The first part of the clip, recorded from the studio feed before it went on air and with director Dave Behrens heard on gallery talkback, is from a documentary screened shortly after Richard's death.

When the side of a cliff collapsed below this home, there was no way to save it. So authorities decided to burn it down so less rubble would fall into the ocean. The whole fire took approximately two hours, but we compressed the entire process to about five minutes.

Aviation Disasters And Plane Crashes In History: Lauda Air Flight 004 - 223 dead: On 26 May 1991 flight 004 from Bangkok to Vienna broke up in the air near the Burma-Thailand border after the thrust reverser on the left wing fired. Reports indicate that it’s subsequent dive could have exceeded mach 1 (the sound barrier). There were no survivors. China Airlines Flight 611 - 225 dead: On 25 May 2002 flight 611 from Taiwan to Hong Kong disintegrated mid flight due to faulty repairs 22 years earlier. Korean Air Flight 801 - 228 dead: Despite protests from the flight engineer that the captain was not detecting the correct signal for landing, he pressed on and guided flight 801 from Seoul, South Korea directly into the Guam mountainside leaving only 26 survivors. Air France Flight 447 - 228 dead: 1 June 2009 flight 447 disappeared on its way to Paris from Rio de Janeiro. Although the wreckage was found after 5 days the black box was recovered 2 years later. The cause was found to be an inappropriate pilot response to faulty air speed indicators due to bad weather conditions and ice. Swissair Flight 111 - 229 dead:On 2 September 1998 Swissair flight 111 from New York to Geneva crashed into the ocean just off of Nova Scotia due to a rapidly spreading cockpit fire. 9/11 flights:Although not a single air disaster, the four flights involved in 9/11 were responsible for the greatest single day loss of life in commercial aviation history. Two of the flights, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 each were responsible for thousands of casualties after being driven into the World Trade Centers and are considered the largest and second largest losses of life due to individual plane crashes in all of aviation history with 1700 and 1000 people killed respectively. Tenerife Airport Disaster - 583 dead: In terms of passengers and crew killed this collision between two Boeing 747s on the Spanish Island of Tenerife is considered the deadliest plane crash in history. Japan Airlines Flight 123 - 520 dead:On August 12, 1985 a flight from Tokyo to Osaka crashed into Mount Takamagahara leaving only 4 survivors. Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision - 349 dead: The deadliest mid-air collision in history, Saudi Arabian airlines and Kazakhstan airlines crashed just west of New Delhi killing everyone on both planes. An investigation found that once again a lack of English language skills on behalf of the Kazakh pilots was the primary cause. Ermenonville air disaster - 346 dead:After a Moroccan baggage handler was unable to read the proper latching instructions in either English or Turkish on Turkish airlines flight 981, the latch blew off mid flight as the plane crashed into Ermonville forest near Paris, France. Furthermore, the latches had a known design flaw. Air India Flight 182 - 329 dead:On the 23 of June, 1985 a bomb exploded onboard Air India Flight 182 as it was flying between London and Montreal. The plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Ireland. A Canadian Sikh militant group was responsible. Saudia Flight 163 - 301 dead:This flight from Rihadh to Jeddah caught fire shortly after takeoff. It turned around and made an emergency landing but everyone on board died of smoke inhalation before fire crews could get inside. The fire was started due to butane stoves used by Muslim pilgrims because of their strict dietary restrictions. Saudi Arabia has since banned the stoves but some people still smuggle them onboard to make tea. Iran Air Flight 655 - 290 dead: During the Iraq-Iran war on July 3, 1988 the USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air Flight 665 going between Tehran and Dubai due to confused communications. American Airlines Flight 191 - 273 dead:Just moments after takeoff the left engine of Flight 191 from Chicago to Los Angeles came off. The plane rolled, turned upside down and crashed into a field. A firefighter on the scene was quoted as saying that not a single complete body was found. Amateur photos of the crash sparked a media firestorm condemning the DC-10’s poor safety record.

Thirteen homes on top of a cliff at Hemsby near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk are at risk of crashing into the sea after two 'Beast from the East' weather events speeded up coastal erosion in the area. Local residents are calling for more government funding to provide better sea defences. The Environment Agency says the local authority Great Yarmouth Borough Council is responsible for coastal protection but the council says it can't afford it and is that it does not have a statutory duty to protect land it doesn't own. The Environment Agency says this part of the Norfolk coast is subject to 'managed re-alignment' which it defines as 'allowing the shoreline to move naturally, but managing the process to direct it in certain areas." Yonaguni Pyramids In the mid 80s, Divers found underwater rock terraces and pyramids off the coast of Yonaguni Jima. Yonaguni Jima is an island that lies near the southern tip of Japan's Ryukyu archipelago, About 75 miles off the eastern coast of Taiwan. At first scientists believed they might be natural formations, but There are quarry marks and some writing on the stones and animal statues that have also been found underwater. Now some experts believe that The structures Could be what is left of the mythical city of Mu, a fabled Pacific civilization rumored to have vanished beneath the waves. Masaki Kimura, a marine geologist from the University of Japan, Has been studying the underwater pyramids for over 15 years. The underwater structures include castle ruins, a triumphal arch, five temples and at least one large stadium, all of which are Connected by roads and water channels and are partly shielded by what could be huge retaining walls. Kimura believes the ruins date back to at least 5,000 years, based on the dates of stalactites found inside underwater caves that he says sank with the city. The theory is that the ancient underwater city Might have been sunk by an earthquake or tsunami around 2,000 years ago. Yonaguni invites tourists and researchers to dive freely around the site. 2. Sunken City of Cuba In 2001, A company called Advanced Digital Communications (ADC) was working with Fidel Castro's government to explore Cuban waters looking for sunken Spanish ships loaded with treasure. Their Sonar equipment picked up a series of geometrical structures lying on the bottom of the ocean. Here's a computer generated image of the pyramids and other structures found underwater. The structures and design made it look like there was A gigantic underwater city at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle. The media went crazy claiming that Atlantis had been discovered in Cuba. There are local legends of the Maya and native Yucatecos that tell of an Island inhabited by their ancestors that vanished beneath the waves. If it's true the structures were made by an ancient civilization, they would have been the Most technologically advanced structures on the planet at that time. Scientists estimate that they would have been built about 50,000 years ago which doesn't seem very likely. The numerous structures and cities that have been discovered underwater around the world Lie less than 120 meters (or 395 feet) below sea level, which comes as no surprise since the sea level never fell below this mark during the time Homo sapiens walked the earth. This Cuban city, if we can call it that, is the Only exception since It is submerged over 700 meters (2300 feet) underwater. If the large structures are actually pyramids, 2 of them are Even larger than the pyramids of Giza and Cheops in Egypt. As of yet there is no plausible explanation for the existence of this city and ADC is still trying to investigate the site. 3. Lake Titicaca Lake Titicaca is Located in the Andes between Bolivia and Peru. It is the largest freshwater lake in South America and was the cradle of Peru's ancient civilizations, including the Inca. Their presence can be seen on Lake Titicaca by the ruins they left behind, including A mysterious underwater temple thought to be between 1,000 and 1,500 years old. In the Incan creation myth, The god Con Tiqui Viracocha emerged from Lake Titicaca. After commanding the sun, moon, and the stars to rise, Viracocha created more human beings from stone. After bringing them to life, Viracocha Commanded them to go and populate the world. The Incas therefore believed that Lake Titicaca was their place of origin, and that upon death, Their spirits would return to this lake. Archeologists located a huge temple in 2000 after following a submerged road (and I'm sure following advice from locals). After 18 days of diving below the clear waters of Titicaca, scientists said they had Discovered a 660-foot long, 160-foot wide temple, a terrace for crops, and a 2,600-foot containing wall along with gold and statues. It is said the lost city was Covered with sediment during a great flood of biblical proportions and local people had passed down the stories of the underwater temple and flood from generation to generation.

As survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami grappled with the enormity of the devastation, more footage emerged on Sunday showing the moment the tsunami struck Japan's northeast coast. Residents of the port town of Kamaishi in Iwate prefecture watched in horror as the first huge tsunami waves hit, sweeping away cars and buildings. One group managed to scramble to safety on higher ground, where they watched as the water surged towards them. Others were stranded on the roof of a multi-storey building as the water level rose rapidly below. (26 Dec 2015) LEAD-IN: The architetural treasures of Karachi's colonial era buildings are falling into disrepair. Now the fight is on to save these historical buildings but property developers are less sympathetic about their plight, eyeing the value in the real estate for modern high-rise developments. STORY-LINE : This beautiful building is falling into disrepair. Shafquat House in downtown Karachi in Pakistan is one of many such buildings that are in desperate need of some attention, otherwise they could be lost forever. Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi is steeped in history, and is a veritable treasure trove of historical landmarks and heritage sites like this. The architecture and buildings, particularly in the old town centre, are full of colonial era structures. But instead of being preserved as part of the city's rich cultural heritage, the majority of these majestic structures have been allowed to fall into a state of absolute disrepair. Decades of neglect have resulted in some heritage sites reduced to abandoned structures. "A sizable number of these buildings are getting dilapidated. And in many cases, the residents themselves are not taking any kind of interest in their restoration. And there are multiple reasons for that. In many cases, the buildings that we have identified, they actually exist in places where the land values have increased tremendously. And as a consequence, the owners and occupants are of the view that if these buildings are allowed to deteriorate and completely get demolished, then maybe, there will be a time, when they will be able to get them removed and construct new high-rise, high-density structures, which will be more lucrative and rewarding for them," says Dr Noman Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Architecture & Planning, Nadirshaw Eduljee Dinshaw (NED) University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi. Environmental degradation has also impacted these historical monuments. The high levels of atmospheric pollution, smog, and the proximity to the sea, as well environmentally damaging local industry have all contributed to their downfall. Yasmeen Lari, who runs the Heritage Foundation, is a champion of Karachi's historical sites. According to her, environmental factors as well as the greed of not only government officials but building owners have also resulted in the slow erosion and sometimes overnight demolition of such structures. "So, I think, all the politicians have to be very mindful. And unless they are mindful, I feel, they are… either they make them into touristic attractions, so they destroy heritage from that point of view, because rather than keeping the authenticity and integrity of the structure, they start making them modern, or making them look new, which is, again, not the thing to be done. So, there is a lot of awareness that we have to bring about among our politicians, among the general public. And most of all, I feel, we have to empower people to tell them that look, you can also save your structure that is right down the road," says Yasmeen Lari, the Chair & CE, Heritage Foundation. Her organisation has helped to catalogue Karachi's architectural legacy and has published a list of 600 structures that should be listed as heritage sites. They were also able to get a law enacted that prohibits destruction and demolition of such buildings. The law builds upon a British era antiquities law that safeguards such structures. Yet, according to experts, buildings and structures are sometimes de-notified to facilitate demolition and replacement by high-rises. Nonetheless, the antiquities department has taken steps to preserve the culture and heritage of Karachi. Over a thousand more structures have been added to the initial list of 600. Ever wondered how ships are launched? Read our detailed article to find out http://www.engineeringworldchannel.com/ship-launching-explained/ About Ship Launch : Ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, and it represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle. The process also involves many traditions intended to invite good luck, such as christening by breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the bow as the ship is named aloud and launched. There are three principal methods of conveying a new ship from building site to water, only two of which are called "launching." The oldest, most familiar, and most widely used is the end-on launch, in which the vessel slides down an inclined slipway, usually stern first. With the side launch, the ship enters the water broadside. The third method is float-out, used for ships that are built in basins or dry docks and then floated by admitting water into the dock. In all cases, heavy chains are attached to the ship and the drag effect is used to slow the vessel once afloat, until tugboats can move the hull to a jetty for fitting out. One mother is defending her decision to let her 6-month-old daughter fend for herself after falling into a pool. Mom Keri Morrison came under fire for standing by as her daughter, Josie, was lured into the pool. "To me, when I look at that video, I see nothing but amazing. Here is a six-month-old sitting on the steps, falls in, does exactly what she is supposed to do," Keri tells IE. "I started Josie so early on the lesson because I lost my son, Jake, in a drowning accident," she said.

Today we explore an abandoned school. As you know, buildings aren’t really our thing so bear with us. We cannot tell you anything about this school but maybe some of the viewers can help us out. Having now done our research we can rule out the possibility of this being a school for the kids of military personnel (let see who reads the description and who leave a sarcastic comment). The building was erected in the early 1800’s and then turned into a private school in 1930. Please note, this was filmed in 2017. NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans.
