Create new connection with new user in Oracle SQL Developer

778 ratings | 370156 views
This video shows you how to create a new connection using a new user account (other than the system user account) in Oracle SQL Developer, so that you have a clean workspace without all the clutter of system tables. It is NOT a general introduction to using Oracle SQL Developer.

when i create new connection using same username and password it copies existing connection data into new one connection..is it possible to create new connection with same username and password with no existing table data??
Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
Yes, exactly: the video shows you how to create a new username. It is the new username that has an empty connection, not just a new connection.

From where password is been set...At which step???
Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
This video is just step 3 of the process. For the prior two steps (install Oracle and install Oracle SQL Developer), see my instructions at http://chitu.okoli.org/bios/pro/teach/btm-382/install-oracle-for-btm-382/#how_to_install_oracle
Aachal Bhangre (1 year ago)
Chitu Okoli can u pls provide the link of previous video of this? ..Thanks in advance
Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
Aachal Bhangre You need to use the password that you used when you installed Oracle Database (which you must do before this video, or else it won't make sense).

Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
This video is only for the last step. The full steps are: 1. Install Oracle Database (that's when you set the system password) 2. Install SQL Developer 3. Configure the connections (that's what this video is about). Full details can be found at http://chitu.okoli.org/bios/pro/teach/btm-382/install-oracle-for-btm-382/#how_to_install_oracle

Only one solution: reinstall Oracle and remember the password this time. All existing user accounts will probably be lost.
sujit gupta (1 year ago)
I just download a zip file and I unzipped it.i did not get any option to enter password and username. Please Help
Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
sujit gupta All instructions and links are available here: http://chitu.okoli.org/bios/pro/teach/btm-382/install-oracle-for-btm-382/. Please note that you won't have access to the password-protected links for my students, but just follow the public links for Oracle. You will need to create a free Oracle account to download their software.
sujit gupta (1 year ago)
Sir Please please give me a link to download Oracle database..
Chitu Okoli (1 year ago)
sujit gupta The login information comes from the Oracle Database that you are connecting to, not from Oracle SQL Developer itself. So, you must first install Oracle Database. During the Oracle Database installation procedure, you will be asked to enter a password for the default user account, whose login ID is "system".

Getting the following error: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure Anyone have a solution?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
No, generally having 2 or 5 or 10 JDKs is not a problem; they shouldn't interfere with each other. Sorry, I don't know that error, but Google has some answers: https://www.google.fr/search?q=com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException%3A+Communications+link+failure&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&ei=hwDdWKPDOtCN8Qez4KiwDg
Stephen D (2 years ago)
I've installed Oracle express, could the problem be due to the fact that I have installed the version of SQL developer containing a JDK, meaning I have two JDKs. One for Eclipse and one for SQL developer?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
That's a MySQL error message. Are you sure you're running Oracle?

I did not use any password to install Oracle!!!
Henri A (2 years ago)
Thanks for the explanation. In our company people use SQL Server Management. I used that to have access to a special server to grab data from database. I know as you said it is a paid one but this version that I use is free and more educational. but the confusing part was why we have EX and Developer that you already explained to me! I am just playing with it to get to know it.
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
Oracle Database is the real database program. It runs in the background of your computer. Many different programs (not just by Oracle, but by all kinds of companies) can connect to the Oracle Database. This is where the security is controlled, hence you need the login and ID even just to create the system. Most Oracle Database versions are quite expensive, but XE is the free version that Oracle offers so that people can use the system for simple things or for learning. Oracle SQL Developer is a separate program offered by Oracle to let you easily connect to and manage the Oracle Database. There are lots of programs offered by lots of companies to connect to an Oracle Database, but Oracle SQL Developer is the free one that Oracle itself offers. I know it's confusing, but ALL enterprise-class databases work the same way. The database itself is one program, and you need a separate program to connect to it. Only simple databases like Microsoft Access have all-in-one programs, but Microsoft Access cannot handle the heavy lifting that even a medium-sized organization (100 users plus) needs. And forget about connecting it to the Web for mutli-user access--it can't handle that. That's what Microsoft SQL Server is for.
Henri A (2 years ago)
This is confusing!
Henri A (2 years ago)
Wow! Finally my connection is there! :D But tell me something plz why we have "XE" and sql versions! Why with one you need to create your password and username and with one you manage them! Why not all together then?!

how can i create form using sql developer?
Younes Beneus (2 years ago)
you can do that by using ORACLE forms. SQL developer is a tool allowing you to interact with database using SQL.
Chery Merah (2 years ago)
Its like the form that we create in microsoft access, where the viewer fill in their data. Do we have that such form in sql developer?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
I don't understand what you mean by a "form" in the context of Oracle SQL Developer.

while creating new user,I am getting invalid user or role name error. could you clarify me.
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
What is the user name you're trying to use? It might not be acceptable to Oracle. Try a different, simple name. Either one of these two situations might apply: * You're using illegal characters (see https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/sql_elements008.htm); or * You might be trying to name it an existing user name or a reserved Oracle key word (e.g. "system"). However, without knowing what name is giving the error, it's hard to tell.

There's only one thing you can do: reinstall Oracle Database and remember the password this time (you might need to uninstall it before reinstalling, but I'm not sure).
Adi Ashraf (2 years ago)
thanks a lot
Doha Elabidi (2 years ago)
the user name and password are the ones of my oracle account?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
+Phillis Shayi I'm referring to the Oracle Database (not Oracle SQL Developer) installation. It always asks you for a password for the system user.
Doha Elabidi (2 years ago)
thank you it works
Phillis Shayi (2 years ago)
what do u do when it didn't ask you to install a username and password?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
For the system user, the username is always "system" and the password is the password you created during Oracle installation. For the second user, the username and password are whatever you choose as shown in the video.

Glenn Conner (2 years ago)
Thanks great video, I now have clean schemas that I can query from. Note I did have a connection problem when trying to connect the first time. I see from the comments others had the same as we received the error:"status: failure - Test failed: Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12505, TNS-listener does not currently know of the SID given in connect descriptor"This is what worked for me (windows 7)....Your connection window shows a SID of xe. After installing SQL Developer and going to the connection window for the first time the default for the SID is 'xe' which matches your screen. However in my default tnsnames.ora file, my connection name didn't list a SID, instead it listed (SERVICE_NAME = orcl) So what I did is in the new connection window I selected 'Service Name' instead of the SID and typed in "orcl" (oh-are-see-el)(without the double-quotes). If this still does not work for others you need to look at your tnsnames.org file, perhaps after this writing oracle developer changed the name or re-introduced the SID.  Good luck!

Gettting this error when connecting with user-name 'system': ORA12543: TNS: destination host unreachable. Could someone please help !
Thanks for this! Obviously because it's localhost, that database is only accessible using that PC, right? But do you know how I can make it accessible by any PC in the world? That would be great if you can help me answer that question :) In the mean time I'll just search for the answer.

+Kingsleys Tech Channel You might want to look into a cloud database offering from Oracle or Amazon.

+Chitu Okoli Hi, I'm having the same error. Can you tell us how to run the database? thx
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+Theo Rio You can also refer to my response to Abhishek Kumar below for more details.
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+Theo Rio Are you sure that Oracle Database is running? Perhaps Oracle Database is not running, and so SQL Developer cannot connect to it. If you're sure that Oracle Database is running, then close SQL Developer completely and then restart it after 30 seconds. I've seen this (or a similar) error when I started SQL Developer before Oracle Database was fully started.
LAKHAN BHAGNANI (3 years ago)
(Status : Failure -Test failed : IO Error : The Network Adapter could not establish the connection) what should i do to this error
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+LAKHAN BHAGNANI Most likely, Oracle Database is not running, and so SQL Developer cannot connect to it.

Official Taher (3 years ago)
hello ! please help me for this message (Status : Failure -Test failed : IO Error : The Network Adapter could not establish the connection) ?
Chitu Okoli (2 years ago)
+Santosh Khedkar Practically speaking, no. There is no Oracle Database for Mac. You need to run Windows or Linux on the Mac (using Bootcamp, Virtualbox, Parallels, or whatever you like), and then run Oracle Database in that. However, if you just want to play around with Oracle without installing it, then you could try the online versions at http://sqlfiddle.com/ (be sure to choose Oracle) or https://livesql.oracle.com (registration required).
Santosh Khedkar (2 years ago)
+omege rule Do you know oracle database version for Mac OSX? I see Windows and Linux only- http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/database-technologies/express-edition/downloads/index.html
omege rule (3 years ago)
Install Database Express Edition 11g Release 2 (realease 2 is current version at the time of this post) and then create the new connection as stated in this video. This should solve your problem

Akhirah Strong (3 years ago)
Are you going to do more tutorials on SQL Developer?
Akhirah Strong (3 years ago)
+Chitu Okoli Yeah that's what I meant. You are clear, calm, and concise. If you ever find the time to create a tutorial, there will be many happy beginners.
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+Akhirah Strong I usually only make tutorials when 1) my students have a problem; 2) it needs a video to really explain the solution well and 2) I can't find any good tutorial on YouTube that helps them out adequately. Other than that, I don't have a master plan for a tutorial series, if that's what you mean. However, if you have a specific request, I'll consider it. That said, you might want to check out Jeff Smith's website (http://www.thatjeffsmith.com) and YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/ThatJeffSmith/videos). He's a on the development team of Oracle SQL Developer, has lots of super-useful material already, and is incredibly responsive to questions people ask.
thanks bro
Abhishek Kumar (3 years ago)
I am getting IO error.and it says that network adaptor couldnot establish the connection.please reply as sson as possible
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+Abhishek Kumar Usually I get this error if there is a problem with Oracle Database running. It is hard to explain in a YouTube comment (this is not not a tech support forum), but in brief, you have to make sure that Oracle Database is actually running before you actually start Oracle SQL Developer. Here are the steps you can follow: 1. Follow the steps described in this video: https://youtu.be/zY1AUhAeFSI 2. When you get to the services to enable, first make sure that Oracle SQL Developer is completely closed. Then enable first OracleServiceXE. Wait for it to start running. Then, after it has started running, enable second OracleXETNSListener, in that order. See this image to see which services to enable: http://snag.gy/vncSf.jpg 3. Wait 60 seconds. This is important, or else you might still have trouble. 4. Start Oracle SQL Developer and try to connect again. I hope that works.

Mark Curry (3 years ago)
Followed your example exactly and get the following error: SQL Error: ORA-65096: Invalid Common user or Role name What version of Oracle/SQL Developer are you using? I'm using the Virtual Box Appliance downloaded from their website. Includes Oracle 12.1c and SQL Developer
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+Mark Curry Thanks for posting the solution to your issue! It might help some others.
Mark Curry (3 years ago)
+Mark Curry : I resolved the problem as follows: The first issue I had was, in creating the user, Oracle insisted that I preface the username with "C##" to make it a common user. That was the error ORA-65096 Then in granting privileges as Chitu describes, i received a different error saying I was not able to grant those privileges. I resolved that error as follows: 1. The error message will the line number of the statement, as well as the statement itself, that is causing the errors. 2. IN the Create User window, select the SQL tab that shows the SQL script. 3. Identify the line in the script that is causing the error and comment it out by inserting 2 dashes, --, at the beginning of the line. 4. Click the apply button and you will get another error message giving the line number and offending statement. Repeat steps 1-4 about a dozen times until you no longer get error messages, and then proceed with Chitu's method. Works like a charm! Thanks, Chitu!

evrytime i creat user and put a user name and a password it show me error ??? why please help
Chitu Okoli (3 years ago)
+latifah mai It might be that you're using an illegal character (such as a space) in the user name or password. To help you, I need to know the exact user name and password that are giving the error, and I also need a screenshot of the error. You can send me this information through http://chitu.okoli.org/contact/, and I'll respond.
