The Village Thats Falling into the Sea - HQ documentary

136 ratings | 34605 views
Thursday 5 December 2013 is a night the residents of the Norfolk seaside resort of Hemsby will never forget. That night homes fell into the sea during the worst storm surge to hit the East Coast for sixty years. David Whiteley witnessed the drama unfold. Seven months on he returns to find the community still fighting for the survival of their village. Hemsby is a village people fall in love with. It is the site of one of the country's first holiday camps, and tourists still flock there today to enjoy its beautiful sandy beach. But with no hope of government money to protect it, villagers have seen almost 70 homes go over the edge and into the sea. Seeking advice from erosion experts and business gurus, and building their own defences, the residents are determined not to let Hemsby be lost to the sea. David joins the villagers in their latest campaign, meets the people about to buy a home on the threatened dunes and goes with the map man who's quite literally been redrawing the map of the East coast over 40 years of erosion.

To all those people saying she had time... have you thought that they might not have had the money to just up and move .. who the feck would they sell their home too? I live local to heavy and it's so sad to see such devastation getting worse over the years... happisburgh too.. Hurray to the people of hemsby for not being detered and saving our beloved coastline. if we all just let the sea eat away at the UK there would be NO UK left... think about that?....

Why don't the community get together and start building a wall just like Trump. Do it for free get the diggers in and start building a concreate 12 foot wall. Been to Hemsby is a nice place shame it will be lost to the sea in years to come.

It crazy that the cliffs were much further out in the 50s . I hope its not geoengineering that has caused the weather changes

To the Residents of Hemsby: I offer up my Prayers, and I extend my Love to them. I am So Very Sorry for the Loss of their Homes. I can't imagine the Pain they must be feeling. I am truly Sorry for their losses. I pray for their Personal safety, and for the safety of their families, and friends. God Bless them all, and May God protect them from ALL harm.

They should have packed up & got out of there sooner, they knew what was happening. I would have left as soon as the neighbors house was lost. :(

I don't understand why Jackie didn't make plans to leave earlier! You can't just bury our head in the sand!
Conor Scott (1 month ago)
If she leaves before the house goes over the cliff she wouldn’t get any money for it but if she is still living in it she will get full compensation for it or she will get a cheque for much she paid for it when bought it

Ironically that probably would have helped stop her house washing away :D

The irony is that jackie doesnt even have a view of the sea. Ukip voters,eh.

Was this not known about before these homes were built?? Or did they not realise how severe the problem was with erosion?..Seems that there are no old homes here? Did 'modern' developers build on unsuitable ground knowingly?
Graham Sweet (1 year ago)
Most of these chalet type homes were built in the 50s and 60s I think you'll find and the high tide was over 300 mtrs away at that time.there was also another line of chalets on the seaward side
