Are the mole crabs around in the winter? I like the video!
311POPE (11 days ago)
Hello spark fishing and sorry I just seen your post. In my area these crabs are in the surf all year. We usually only catch them during the winter months to fish our pompano and sheepshead migration. Glad you enjoyed the video!!

In 1978 when I first visited my parents in Naples Florida after they moved there from Minnesota. My father told me about sand flea's. Basically they were free bait. For the casual fishing they're easy to collect. Go to the beach, walk into the surf right where the waves break and you'll feel where there's a slight drop off. Take a colander (bowl with lot's of holes used for draining water from food) and scoop into the sand at that point. Walk up the beach and dump it out. Spread the sand and the sand flea's will run like hell. Scoop them up and put them in a bait bucket. Fish LOVE THEM. Free and easy to catch.

what is that tool that you are using
311POPE (2 months ago)
Hello Beth! We call them sand flea rakes and the larger ones, like in this video, are handmade. Our local bait shops along with Wal-Marts all sell sand flea rakes but they are much smaller. Cheers!

Thanks for this video. There are way too many fishing channels on YouTube that are nothing more than guys just showing what they catch. it is very much appreciated that you actually give some instructions for new fishermen. Or older fisherman looking to learn new tricks. thank you

Can sand fleas be on any beach?
311POPE (10 months ago)
I have been on a lot of beaches around the world and there are quite a few that do not have them. Most rocky or stone beaches that i've been on do not.
MrJag2074 (10 months ago)
desde que mire este video, en2016 he puesto en practica estas recomendaciones, y he aprendido como recojer sand fleas. ahora ecojo solo las que quiero!! gracias,, thats a lot of fun catchin this lil. guys, thanks for the tips, very useful, i'll being harvest sand fleas all the time,
Fritz Wilhelm (11 months ago)
They can actually bite viciously, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. Throw a piece of ham into a tidal sand pool, and all the babies rush up out of the sand to chow down on it. If you, or your kids, sit in the pools, they will start to bite you.

Rad Reeling Fishing (1 year ago)
Great video! How long can you keep sand fleas alive in a five gallon bucket with sand and some beach water?
311POPE (1 year ago)
Whazzz up Rad Reel !? Your question is very loaded my friend, we can keep fleas alive for about a week but the moment we catch them we're looking to release alive for fresh ones. There's a lot of factors that go into keeping fleas fresh for fishing. The most important things to remember is keep the fleas cool, moist not soaking wet, in a well drained environment/container and spread out, to many fleas in a container that's to wet and they will die overnight. Fish on!!!

At 49 years of age, I should have known these were not really fleas. I grew up in the desert, the ocean was far away for me :) Are these things tasty?
311POPE (1 year ago)
They are not bad however I would rather eat the fish we catch with them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNHLOg2nb9Y

My older sister said “I feel something on the sand, I don’t like this” I have no idea what it is but me and my family stay in Santa Monica which is Long way and We stay there like two weeks, I think it was in 2016 last year. Last week, I told my sister what it is and I told her “Sans fleas”, she was so disgusted by it and then we i picked all the sand, there were like two little sand fleas, she was like “there cute” and I said to her “there maybe big ones too” she was like “OMG EWWWW”, I was laughing so hard but when it was my first time there I said “It is sand crab” 😂😂😂😂😂 Oh and by the way, sand fleas don’t bite they just crawl in the sand that is it.

When I was in myrtle beach I found one and it had a smaller one I think it was a baby attached to it's back and we looked up a sea cockroach and they look the same
Andrew Skeith (1 year ago)
Catching mole crabs down at the beach is a favorite past time. You'd see all the little kiddies with their buckets digging in the wash zone, trying to catch the big ones. There would always be that one kid who bragged about his collection being bigger than anybody else's. Those were simpler times.

It was 1971......Satellite Beach Florida. I was 7 years old, we lived at 700 Flamingo Dr. The beach was basicly across the street. I remember learning how to dig for Sand Fleas by a local fisherman.

Sorry, but only an ego maniac would give away info that good fishermen learn the hard way. From trial and error. You just gave away info to a whole bunch of A-holes who don't have the right to instantly know about flea raking (they keep even the berried females), why didn't you tell them to release those ?. There's already a dramatic reduction in fleas and flea size. I'm, 60 and have been pompano fishing all of florida since I was a small boy. There used to be millions of fleas the size of a small chicken egg. Now it's mostly just little ones. Hell the pompano schools used to lay flat and ride up with the waves feeding and the whole wash would be solid pompano. Why the hell would you post this. You could not be much of a commercial pompano fisherman because now you can only cast net or rod and reel like you. I doubt you ever made a set in your life. Real commercial fishermen, like any smart merchant, don't post trade secrets all over you tube.
311POPE (1 year ago)
You are insulting me and complementing my knowledge in the same paragraph, interesting. Real fishermen, commercial or not, should not feel threatened by others. You and I, assuming your a real commercial fisherman, both know that a single video will never take the place of hard learning by trial and error. What does laying a gill net for pompano have to do with your insults? Growing up in a commercial fishing community I have had my share of run ends with other commercial fishermen. When I asked the older fishermen their advice they would always pose two questions. Does “Big Pompano” put food on your table? No. Does “Big Pompano” put shoes on your baby’s feet? No. Then tell Big Pompano to fuck off. Always listening and respecting my elders I must say, fuck off! Judging by your attitude you probably still lay sets and are a contributing factor why the younger commercial generation will never be able to lay a set in state waters again.

Why am I here!
When I was little we used to take buckets and find those things and one of the times there was a giant one with huge red eyes..I never went to go to catch them again
