Ok, Don't be dumb like me and use the free trial for Filmora. This free trial was not listed, but I used it and after about an hour of editing and exporting I found out that the watermark covers about a quarter of the screen.

Also, I had trouble installing Davinci Resolve so I used Hitfilm Express and it already seems great!

Punch line @ 4:05 Davinci Resolve although is an amazing program; is the hardest editor to work with for the common user. Its free, has a strong platform but its very complex and not for the faint at heart. * Takes a very strong PC to operate * Very complex program with too many features and not enough in-program tutorials for average users * Massive lag due to ram size of program * Program becomes unresponsive multiple times throughout project * Unable to increase "edited" picture duration (Must use original picture then edit once in timeline. * (Everyone can attest to this) Video becomes very choppy once you edit color and click play back. * Videos will auto change frame rate in order to edit which decreases quality depending on what took the video.

I'm currently using HD Movie Maker Pro. I've tried Davinci, but it has some serious audio issues, in that whatever I film, the audio always sounds broken and splotchy.

Thank you for the overview. I think what you have neglected is the consideration of aftermarket plug-ins / effects available for the products. Effects are often limited in the base-software and I constantly come accross cool effect packages either for free or for a small fee but most of them are for FCPX.

I'm downloading the free DaVinci Resolve software now and I'm so excited to try it! I've just bought my first Windows laptop and it's so weird not having iMovie built in and I've found it so hard to try and find good video editing software that's also free 😭 So thank you! I hope it's as good as it looks!
Might be a bit more complicated that imovie, but definitely a lot more powerful.

Does anyone know if it is recommended to have a better processor before dealing with video editing softwares? I have a simple early i3 processor but I don't know if it good enough to run it at a reasonable pace. I get really impatient with computers so I don't want to spend money on something when it's going to run very slowly. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

DO NOT BUY Filmora! They sign you up for a monthly service (that you can't opt out of) when you buy the software. And after I canceled the subscription they charged me anyways. Now I am waiting on PayPal dispute resolution to make this right (and I'm out $10 in the meantime). The money isn't that big a deal, it's the shady business practices. Filmora what are you doing? Doing deceitful business is irresponsible. That's how you lose trust and go out of business! If you work at filmora this is a red flag; beware.
Thorrork (19 days ago)
You got me very interested in DaVinci Resolve! I'm currently using Sony Vegas Pro 13 but somehow my videos end up blurry on Arma-type games, PUBG, Squad etc. Maybe I'll be saved from the blur-menace!

I'm tempted to try Davinci Resolve, but I'm not sure how well it would run on my 2017 mid-tier Surface Pro. Filmora works fine but I have to subscribe to use all the filters and effects, despite paying for a lifetime license. Worth noting in a video like this.

Currently using Corel Videostudio x9 Ultimate. Yes, it is a couple of versions behind, but I HATE being forced to upgrade. I really hate the subscription model that some (like Adobe) have promoted. However, with my last project, I started to realize I need to move up to a more robust editor. Corel has been buggy (lots of crashes on this last project). The colour correction is terrible. And the titling is so completely amature hour that I ended up creating all my own titles in Photoshop and importing them as PNG files, followed by much fiddling with custom motion to make the titles do what I wanted. It is time to go to something better. Thanks for your videos!

Hi Justine, this is a great video very informative. I'm currently using kinemaster on my android phone. Do you know if they do a version for PC. That would be so helpful. Or do you know of a editing program that would do both PC & Android. Thank you
No kinemaster on PC unfortuantely. Power Director works on both and Adobe Rush will work on both soon

Annette Hopkins (24 days ago)
Thanks for the information. I'm still having trouble finding a software that will work for me. I have a Windows 8.1 computer so Davinci will not work for me. I need something that will be easy to use since I just want it for YouTube videos. However, one problem I ran into is some of the free programs say it's only for personal use. I'm starting a YouTube channel for my business. However, I don't really have much money right now. Filmora's business version is $150. I figured I might as well get a better program if I was going to spend that much. Lumafusion looked great for my needs, but I have an Ipad mini. The program will work on it, but it won't have enough memory to handle videos. I was looking at Hit film Express, but it looks a little more difficult to use, I can't find out if you can use it for commercial purposes, and people have commented about the poor video quality. I also looked at Movavi which will work on my computer. I'm not sure if you have to get their business version or not. Any suggestions?
Annette Hopkins (21 days ago)
+Justin Brown - Primal Video Thanks for the information. I decided to go with Movavi. I watched a few of their videos and it looked easy to use. You can download for free to test it out and so far it seems to work fine. The Lumafusion was a mute point since I dropped my I-pad two days ago. (Lesson learned- be very careful when you have to use electronics out in the cold. Things seem to slip out of your hands when your hands are cold.)
Possible to upgrade to Win 10? Even though you're creating video for business you might be able to get away with some of the standard licenses as you're a single user and your software will not be used by more than one person in a business - worth checking the license agreements though

+Jeff T why I hate filmora. I have mid range gaming pc and it lags as hell, thankfully I got it free, not worth it at all.
DO NOT GET FILMORA! I used their new Pro edition - still waiting for someone to call me back on how I can get a refund. It is EXACTLY like Adobe which is over my head. Then, I tried Filmora 9 and split screen is gone (so sad) and it won't render 4k properly. And the worst part of all, the old version is no longer available! I am in a FB group now discussing all this. I'm posting Justin's video for everyone so we can find a new editor.

Really pissed though much as I like using Filmora - you used to be able to just purchase the effects packs you wanted. Now it's subscription based :/

I had a look a few "FREE" software what he mentioned...all of them required a payment now or later...its totally stupid if its free it needs to be free forever ,why is this video even mentioned free stuff when nothing its free..wasted my time again and downloaded stupid shit on my pc..
You must have used a feature from the pro version in your edit.. it should tell you what it was, unless they've made changes to this recently

Thanks for this overview! As you asked, here is what I use: In the past I used Windows Movie Maker, AVS Video Editor, and Avid Studio. For the past two years I've used Cyberlink PowerDirector and have liked it - powerful, easy to use, and as Justin said, it is very fast at rendering. I have a new PC on order and am planning to load DaVinci Resolve on it. I've been watching training videos for a few weeks and think I will like it. It does take a different approach with its "nodes," and some people have commented that it was confusing to them, but from what I see in the tutorials the nodes require sort of a flowchart-like mindset that I have used as a software developer (especially object-oriented software), so I think I will like it. From what I see, it is everything Justin said in this video and more - I think it could eventually knock off Premiere Pro as the #1 editor for professionals.
Thanks for sharing! I agree with everything you've said :D

I edit some videos for church services. Simply taking the video file from the camcorder and the audio file from the sound system and putting them together. Then dropping in a layer for images/slides to show at certain points and that's really about it. I currently use VideoPad's Free version but it limits the export types so I have to create AVI files. Would I be better off trying something like Hitfilms or Davinci instead for the basic usage do? Thanks.

Hate to say this, but after I downloaded Resolve, I received many (5 in a row for two days straight now) bogus scam telemarketer calls from a 'local' area code with shifting last four extensions. I keep my info pretty cornered, so I can say with some confidence that they immediately sold my phone number to nuisance callers, or operate nuisance calling themselves. Also I can't say much good about the Resolve UI so far. It seems to be garbage. Grey lettering on a different grey background? Come on. You can't just climb into the ring with Ali if you think you box. If you have a reality display set up; 2 minutes of arc at your seating position this makes grey on grey pretty useless. Perhaps I can change it with a theme or something. That aside program does look quite powerful. I would have preferred to pay a nominal fee, and NOT receive any nuisance calls. I turned on my phone's white listing function, so maybe they will give up, but still I had it in regular phone mode for months with no calls. This kind of stuff makes me reluctant to ever give out valid information, but I had considered that I might want to purchase the paid version of the tool. From the look of the tool, it seems to be a loss leader/first taste is free for control panel hardware sales. The panels look pretty cool, and seem very expensive. The mini panel is $3000~ Not that I mind, but the UI is obviously setup to work with the panel. Justin Brown, you might want to add this kind of stuff to a review if you check up on that kind of stuff RE video editing programs. Why is the program so good and free? To sell the hardware that seems to have a 600% markup.

Amateur editor here. I've done a bit with the GoPro editing software I got for just buying the camera's. 90% of the recordings I do are with GoPro's and up until recently it has worked out pretty good. But I've been trying to do some editing on some of my clips and adding clips that I've downloaded from the net and GoPro isn't cutting it anymore. Also I'm looking at branching out into drone footage for some of my action shots and I'm afraid that when I do the GoPro software will not be compatible with the formats. Gonna give DaVinci a shot and see how I like it and hopefully it will be the last software I need to download. Thank you for the informative video. -Sparky

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the various options so thoroughly. I have used Camtasia for YEARS. I loved it for taking screen recordings and editing for tutorials/training etc. My poor old version wore out, it was time to purchase the latest. After researching editing software, it seems as if Camtasia is no longer relevant - it's hardly mentioned in any of the software reviews. Looking forward to trying DaVinci - ty again!
