Inside Microsoft’s big bet on open design

12288 ratings | 702266 views
Microsoft is completely changing the company's approach to design. This huge shift will impact how all their products look in the future. Tom Warren visits the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington to learn about what the company calls “open design.” This new way of working will enable Microsoft to build hardware and software that feels like it’s all created by one company. This video added nothing...reusing components, wow that’s novel !!
kailash karkera (4 days ago)
So this "open design" thing has nothing to do with the thumbnail and the misleading picture but it's more like becoming a company like Apple who design both the software and hardware internally. And the best part in the video is when even their own employees are using apple products and not their own. 😂
Aarif Almarshidy (5 days ago)
Hey Steve jobs Look who started believing in your ideas of software/hardware integration!!

Rather than using Mac OS to understand the competition, they should use Windows to understand how much this OS needs to be redesigned in its entirety
Sohrab zia (6 days ago)
So basically apple.
Khaled Kimboo (6 days ago)
Microsoft version of open source goes like this: - We should open our code to a platform, GitHub - how can we still OWN this code? - oh let's OWN that website and everyone working there.
vignesh pai (7 days ago)
That was a lot of macs!
Fariz Afaf (7 days ago)
0:40 is that mac os in the background???
Liam Matteson (7 days ago)
Didn't material design already accomplish this? It's not like this is some breakthrough moment that Microsoft is having. Sounds like they're taking after what Google is already doing
syawkcab (4 days ago)
Material design is about how products look and feel. Open design is about how different teams at Microsoft work together. The name is a little misleading. Open design is not really about the *visual* design, more about the design of the code architecture
edseiya (7 days ago)
So.. basicqlly they are starting to work like Apple ?.. wow.. and it only took.them a few decades..
Nefff (8 days ago)

Da f&ck is this shift only being introduced nowdays? =P How slow can a Coding Company learn? Also, when will the white background of the Start Menu Search "window" and all the legacy settings-windows be actually dark, in Dark Theme Mode?! Anyone knows a hack, at least for the Start Menu Search? (Yes, my priorities are checked ;))
CIRRUS (10 days ago)
yes, developers use macs. sorry pcmr.
Ygor Cortes (10 days ago)
They want all of their software AND their hardware to look consistent, but can't make their own operating system anywhere near consistent. I mean, it has pieces from literally 10 years ago mixed in it. I wonder if Windows will ever look good, modern and consistent for real.
Rocío Vidal (12 days ago)
didnt understand a thing
Martin Klleçi (12 days ago)

John Wallace (12 days ago)
I have to original Arm based surface. I spent over $1K for the tablet/keyboard. Before it became 2 years old Microsoft doomed my Arm based surface tablet by declaring no more development on The Arm based windows OS that was on this tablet. I’m never buying another Microsoft hardware device ever again. I have an Apple iPad Pro 2018. It’s much better device and I know it will be supported by Apple for years to come. Microsoft is not supporting consumers anymore as they realize they have lost that battle. They also do not support small business and education groups as Google and Apple have got those groups. Microsoft Is only supporting enterprise business’s. Groups larger then 1000 people is Microsoft’s target. If you are smaller then that number go to Google, Apple or one of the open source Linux systems because Microsoft doesn’t care about you and considers you already a lost casualty.
Alex Jones (12 days ago)

It's about time Microsoft embrace agile and open source. The best software these few years has been MS Teams and VS Code.
jafl88 (13 days ago)
Windows mobile failed. It lost companies millions choosing it over android. If this is a good example of open design then it wont go well.

The hardware is good, comparable to Apple. What isn't good is the software. Apple has the edge in that area.

I love microsoft and bill gates but recently alot has changed at Microsoft because they have a new ceo in my opinion if they want better products they should pay engineers more salary and stop outsourcing work all the time.

Ohhhhhh, so tiny independent groups (within a company), isn’t very efficient?! *cough* Google *cough*
